The Orb
Controlled. Your world is decided. Before your freedom is presented, your life, and job has been decided. This world is controlled by the Orb. The Orb is a living object that contains over a billion volts of energy that powers the world. One government. One police force. The police force have total control of the world. The government, has full control of the police force. The Orb? Controls all. Anyone who hasn’t scored below average on their pre 18 tests are guaranteed a good life. Gifted ones are presented with the police force. The not so lucky ones are thrown to fend for themselves. Left to die. The percentage of average students is 57%. The grunts are a 30% of the population. The gifted ones? A total of 13% made it. Each person in the world has been given an id card. If your id card goes black. The police force, will find you. Creating a crime, depressed thoughts, and even witnessing a death can black out your card. I Natsu Okazaki have been blessed enough to have been chosen for the police force. He doesn’t believe people’s lives should be chosen. But, he’s one man. Each officer of the police are given a gun. The gun is permitted only to the verified user. It has two modes. Stun, and Eradicate. Depending on the person the Cardin X22 is pointed at, it will depend on how blacked out the id is, to not shoot, stun, or Eradicate the target. Your even chosen as a blossom for being the most respected, and a weed for the least. Your test scores don’t matter. This, is the world of 2578. This, is the world we live in.

...I make that face sometimes too. Well, you probably wondering, ‘what? IS HE IN THE GIRLS DORM?’ Well, you guessed right. Because I was sent flying by a magic spell.
“Why are you here? Peeking? Pervert?” I look behind me to see another wonderful looking girl. But a strong one at that. She sent me flying. Me. Flying. Before she could ask my name she came around the corner all flustered and stuff. “W-w-what are you doing here?!!!” It was Tatsuki. I bolted out of there not even looking behind me if I was being followed. I rush to my room and lock my doors behind me. What’s going to happen tomorrow? I ponder on the thought before realizing what spell that women shot at me. It was a paralyzing spell. I couldn’t do anymore things for the rest of the night! Well not like I had anything planned, so I just drifted into sleep dreaming about the next day and what might happen.
The night was tempestuous and my emotions were subtle, like the flame upon a torch. They blew out at the same time that my sense of tranquility dispersed, as if the winds had simply come and gone. The shrill scream of a young girl ricocheted off the walls and for a few brief seconds, it was the only sound that I could hear. It was then that the waves of turmoil commenced to crash upon me. It seemed as though every last one of my senses were succumbed to disperse from my reach completely. As everything blurred, I could just barely make out the slam of a door from somewhere alongside me and soon, the only thing that was left in its place was an ominous silence.
I woke, I started to run, but I couldn't escape, the walls were closing in. I started to hyperventilate. I jolted up, I grabbed my necklace and pressed the pendent, it glowed in the midnight lit room. Brucie was sitting were the board was. She looked annoyed, she told me not to speak with mother, but the lose drove me mad, I had to speak to her again.
Racial discrimination still exists in these days with the institutional racism which is described groups of people against certain groups of people to limit their privileges. The United States is a country that has more than one ethnic and everyone is different to each other. In the past, I have seen many groups of people are discriminate to other groups based on their skin color, ethnic and personal identity. Institutional racism happened in school as well as in public. People discriminate others by looking at their skin and their race. People need to adapt to the new world and find out more about others culture to stop the institutional racism toward other races or ethnics.
I had got some sleep when Boom!!!. “What's wrong” I cry out hoping for an answer. It never comes. I run out to the hall with my belongings. “Hey lady” I hear from behind me.
The World State also uses controlled groupings of people to brainwash them further into thoughtless people with no sense of individualism. Lastly, the World State uses drugs to create artificial happiness for people, leaving no room for intense emotion which causes people to revolt against the World State. Within the novel Brave New World, it is seen that the World State eliminates individuality through social restrictions, government controlled groupings and the abuse of drugs to maintain control of the population. Social restriction robs individuals of their creative personalities by preventing freedom of thought, behavior, and expression; but is vital to the World State for maintaining complete control over the society. Social restriction’s purpose is to enforce obedience, conformity and compliance out of people.
“The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant tells of Mathilde Loisel who “by error of destiny” was born poor and winds up marrying a clerk. Mr. Loisel surprises Mathilde with an opportunity to taste the luxurious life for an evening and she unexpectedly bursts into tears because she has nothing to wear. Mr. Loisel agrees to buy her a gown and suggests that she borrow jewelry from her wealthy friend. The evening turns out to be a dream come true until the Loisels arrive home to find that the borrowed necklace is no longer around Mathilde’s neck. The Loisels secretly replace the necklace with an expensive duplicate that takes them ten long, hard years to pay off. Shortly after the loan is paid off, Mathilde runs into her rich friend and confesses her secret. Mathilde is distraught to find that the necklace was not the expensive gem she believed; but a faux. The central idea of this story is that when you desperately seek a life not destined for you, you end up sacrificing your own happiness.
As all of this was taking place, I was frozen. Something strange was happening to me. It was as if every single cell in my body was screaming at me to move, yet I still remained stuck in place. Shivering in the blasting cold night, the words fear and death invaded my soul and lamentably waited for the deathblow. The darkness of the lemon orchard under the full moon hidden behind long, high parallels of cloud was accelerating my fear and advancing the idea of `suddenly disappearing` in my mind. I had never thought of death before. The rows of lemon tree standing like elite soldiers made me feel like an enemy soldier captured in war and was being taken to be executed by guillotine. A shotgun was targeted towards my head which made my eyes and legs become paralysed; thus I could not feel or sense anything. My eyes looking blindly and my legs walking briskly with the question” will I die” stuck on my mind like a tick attaches into skin.
Ten years of suffering is the cost of having pleasure for only one night! In “The Necklace,” by Guy de Maupassant presents Mathilde Loisel, an attractive, charming but vacuous and selfish middle class lady transforms to selfness, poor, satisfied and hard-working lady. Even though, Mathidle owns a comfortable home and married to a faithful and kind husband, Monsieur Loisel, who seeks her happiness and satisfaction; she was ungrateful to the things that she had been given, because her greed and desire of wealth had captured her thoughts and blurred the real meaning of happiness in her perspective. Mathidle spends most of her time surfing in her day dreams of being wealthy and suffering from accepting the reality, because her imagination was more than she could not afford. One day Mathidle’s husband brought his wife an invitation for a fancy party, but as a result of their low income, Mathidle’s was ashamed to wear flowers as decoration, so she decided to borrow an expensive looking necklace from a friend of her, Madame Forestier. After attending the fabulous party and spending a memorable great time looking stunningly beautiful, Mathidle discovers that she had lost the expensive necklace that she borrowed, so she decides to buy a similar copy of the necklace to her friend after loaning an enormous amount of money and narrowing the house outcome. The author surprises his readers with a perfectly detailed twist at the end of the story. Losing the necklace was a turning point in Mathidle’s life and the best thing that ever happened to her.
Around the world, values are expressed differently. Some people think that life is about the little things that make them happy. Others feel the opposite way and that expenses are the way to live. In Guy de Maupassant’s short story, “The Necklace”, he develops a character, Madame Loisel, who illustrates her different style of assessments. Madame Loisel, a beautiful woman, lives in a wonderful home with all the necessary supplies needed to live. However, she is very unhappy with her life. She feels she deserves a much more expensive and materialistic life than what she has. After pitying herself for not being the richest of her friends, she goes out and borrows a beautiful necklace from an ally. But as she misplaces the closest thing she has to the life she dreams of and not telling her friend about the mishap, she could have set herself aside from ten years of work. Through many literary devices, de Maupassant sends a message to value less substance articles so life can be spent wisely.
I spent ten minutes trying to decide, and finally went up to my room, and spent the next few minutes daydreaming. These “spells” are especially troubling when I’m in the middle of a class. When this happens, I usually let my mind wander and think about something that makes me content, this usually always gets rid of the dizziness and slows my heart rate down. After a few minutes, my brain is able to concentrate and it’s like nothing ever happened.
In the short story “The Necklace”, the main character, Loisel, is a woman who dreams of greater things in her life. She is married to a poor clerk who tries his best to make her happy no matter what. In an attempt to try to bring happiness to his wife, he manages to get two invitations to a very classy ball, but even in light of this Loisel is still unhappy. Even when she gets a new dress she is still unhappy. This lasts until her husband suggests she borrows some jewelry from a friend, and upon doing so she is finally happy. Once the ball is over, and they reach home, Loisel has the horrible realization that she has lost the necklace, and after ten years of hard labor and suffering, they pay off debts incurred to get a replacement. The central idea of this story is how something small can have a life changing effect on our and others life’s. This idea is presented through internal and external conflicts, third person omniscient point of view, and the round-dynamic character of Loisel. The third person limited omniscient point-of-view is prevalent throughout this short story in the way that the author lets the reader only see into the main character’s thoughts. Loisel is revealed to the reader as being unhappy with her life and wishing for fancier things. “She suffered ceaselessly, feeling herself born for all the delicacies and all the luxuries.” (de Maupassant 887) When her husband tries to fancy things up, “she thought of dainty dinners, of shining silverware, of tapestry which peopled the walls…” (de Maupassant 887) As the story goes on her point of view changes, as she “now knew the horrible existence of the needy. She took her part, moreover all of a sudden, with heroism.” (de Maupassant 891) Having the accountability to know that the “dreadful debt must be paid.” (de Maupassant 891 ) This point-of-view is used to help the reader gain more insight to how Loisel’s whole mindset is changed throughout her struggle to pay off their debts. Maupassant only reveals the thoughts and feelings of these this main character leaving all the others as flat characters. Loisel is a round-dynamic character in that Maupassant shows how she thought she was born in the wrong “station”. “She dressed plainly because she could not dress well, but she was as unhappy as though she had really fallen from her proper station.
“He’s not asleep,” Said a gravely male voice which caused Shawn’s heart to skip a beat. “Look at his heart monitor, Lilith; it proves he is awake.” The man said. Shawn heard light feminine footsteps get closer to his bed and a hand grabbed his chin by one hand and a slightly damp rag was placed over his nose and mouth by the other. Shawn’s eyes snapped open and he saw a young woman with slightly crazed blue eyes and a large just as crazy grin holding the damp rag over his mouth. Shawn started to struggle but soon his struggles weakened and he slipped into darkness.
Throughout the ages, literature has consistently reflected the interests and activities of a people. Therefore, some themes have been dominant in World Literature from ancient times to the present. One such theme greed and generosity, which is explored in the French short story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant.
