Though Erin Morgenstern’s story “The Night Circus” is focused around the theme of magic and the circus, it is still important to notice how she entwines romance into this story. Marco Alisdar, Isobel Martin, and Celia Bowen are all involved in this complex yet ignored love triangle which may become a complication later on during “the competition.” While Marco first falls in love with Isobel at a cafe in London, he shows a stronger interest in Celia when she auditions as an illusionist in the circus.
Marco unintentionally meets Isobel in a cafe while searching for his misplaced book. They share their secret of their magic over a meal and quickly fall in love with each other because of their similarities. Isobel is one of the less mentioned character because she has no major role in “the competition” and only shows up when Marco is with her. Throughout the story, Isobel’s importance to the plot and Marco steadily decreases until she joins the circus as a fortune teller and observes Celia on Marco’s behalf. He notices all of the little features of her face and how her hair “contrasts against her skin,” only being able to describe her as “radiant” (Morgenstern 72). As he watches her performance, he becomes even more speechless at her talent and realizes that she is who he is binded to. After the performance Marco goes back to his house and looks through his book, becoming concerned with the start of “the competition.” Seeing his distress, Isobel decides to draw her tarot cards for Marco; the first card she draws is L'Amoureux, The Lovers.
