The Negatives of Entertainment on Society

Imagine a new James Bond movie just hit theaters, and everybody will rush down to the local movie theater to see it. The movie exhibits an overabundance of action-packed scenes that could stimulate anyone’s senses. However, what good does this film contribute to society? Nothing; it displays the life of an undercover CIA agent who kicks butt for a living, a theme many cannot compare to. James Bond, and many other movies, do not give back to society in a positive aspect, and it is no just limited to movies-T.V. shows, music, plays, and books all count as forms of entertainment that have the capacity to ruin society. This is relevant because we all mindlessly watch, read, and listen to these forms of media without processing how they affect us as a society, and as a result, we find ourselves subliminally wanting to partake in the messages we receive via the media. Opposing viewpoints may state that entertainment does not have the potential to ruin society, and they might blame the people themselves for corruption and disunity in our contemporary culture. However, entertainment, in all its forms, has the ability to obliterate society because it displays unrealistic lifestyles, influences younger audiences to engage in risky activities, and makes its viewers unintelligent.
One of the mainly portrayed themes in almost all entertainment is an unrealistic lifestyle. On MTV, runs a show called AWKWARD. It expresses the life of a girl who does not rank high on the social status scale, also known as a loser. As the seasons progress, she has relationships with three of the hottest guys who attend her school, loses her virginity, loses her closest friends, becomes friends with them again, parties all night, her parents kick her out of the h...

...vity, drinking, smoking both illegal and legal drugs, and having an overall “good time.” A majority of the songs that encompass these motifs aim their songs at a target audience ages thirteen to twenty-one. In this age range, the prefrontal cortex of the brain has not fully developed. The prefrontal cortex’s responsibilities include making one stop and think of the decisions they devise to do. On their own, adolescents make irrational judgments, but when a catalyst like songs that send out indecorous themes, they act in an even more absurd manner. The obscenities in these songs cause adolescents to think they will become part of the “cool club” if they behave in such atrocious ways. T.V. shows, another form of entertainment, inspire young adults to erratically behave. Jersey Shore, although it no longer airs new episodes, retains the assets of a misguiding program.
