Dangers of Social Media Social Media plays a big role in today’s society and it is the way in which most people get by seeing as it is used on a daily basis. Social Media are websites where individuals interact with one another and share information. Social Media benefits society and harms it at all at once. It benefits society by allowing businesses to advertise freely, individuals to pursuit their musical careers and for news to spread quickly. Some believe that ‘Social networking sites help students do better at school. 59% of students with access to the Internet report that they use social networking sites to discuss educational topics and 50% use the sites to talk about school assignments” (Procon) However, “If the students checked Facebook just once during the 15-minute study period, they had a lower grade-point average”. (Clemmitt) This shows that social media is the main source of distraction which does not allow individuals to focus on their academic work. This is harmful to society because individuals will not be able to completely focus on a task. Thus individuals would complete their tasks with little thought on how they are doing it. Procon has also mention that “People who use social media have a lower grade point average (3.02) social media than people who don't use social media. (3.82) they also tend to get lower test grades”. This shows that the impact social media had on students’ academic career is negative. With a low grade point average students feel no need to push themselves which leads to low self-motivation. Even though some may argue that Social Media has led to educational opportunities, others may argue that it is has done more damage to academics
"Stop whining. Your life can't be that bad! Look at your Facebook timeline, or yesterday's Instagram post", they say. But I am not my social media timeline – or am I?
Humans are prone to distraction, adding in easily accessible sites such as social media, increases their potential for distraction. 59% of students are accessing social media in class, effecting the classroom environment, while even more access it during study time (Does social media effect efficiency). Technology is a tool that most college students were born into, and social media has become a major part of that tool. We use social media to reach out to our friends, family, and those across the world. As well as getting our opinions, feelings, experiences and plans shared.
Michael J. Bugeja, director of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication at Iowa State University and author of“Facing the Facebook” in The Chronicle of Higher Education, states that the initial purpose of having access to the Internet in the classroom was to give students the opportunity to conduct research. However, this privilege is rapidly being used as a means for students to not pay attention during class. A poll was taken at Iowa State University where 20,247 out of the 25,741 enrollees were registered on Facebook (Bugeja 1). Social networking sites such as Facebook have had some negative effects in academia such as “institutions seeking to build enrollment learn that ‘technology’ rates higher than ‘rigor’ or ‘reputation’” (2), that there has been improper use of the freedom to use technology in the classroom, that employers and parents check Facebook to see what users have been doing, and that technology is an overall distraction in the classroom.
Social networks are mostly bad for society. There are several items being constantly criticized on Facebook, for instance. Social media brings people closer and farther apart at the same time. Facebook’s treatment of users, privacy concerns, psychological effects, misleading campaigns, hate groups, inappropriate content controversies, security, better business bureau review, and the list goes on. Facebook has been known for online privacy, hate speech, and inability to end account easily. There have also been censorship issues on and off internet.
Many students have a harder time focusing on their work when they could be using social networking sites and the quality of their work isn’t as good as it could be because of this. 31% of teens say that using social networking media while doing their homework time reduces the quality of their work (Social Networking ProCon. Org). However, it can help students do better in school because it lets them communicate and it reduces the risk of students dropping out. According to ProCon.org, who provided the article, “Are Social Networking Sites Good
Social media and digital media can have positive and negative outcomes. Today, many young people have used digital media as an outlet of coping with pressure and anxiety. Many people have started to publish blogs and talk about their days. In China and around the world, social media helps the young to mingle with the world. This gives the young people an opportunity to network with the other side of the world and become more open with other personality. It allows these people to express themselves, and relieve stress. In Korea, due to strictness, school and work, teens have taken the opportunity to express themselves anonymously through social media. Social media is a diverse and open space to connect with others who are going through the same problems or have similar issues. Which can help you cope with problems if you need advice. Older generations argue that digital media has caused today 's generation to be be lazy. Some of that is true, people use it to play games and lose track of time, others get distract themselves by becoming interested in Hollywood

When was the last time you talked to your friends in person, not over text messages, Facebook or Twitter? In order to answer the question you would have to think about it first. It is not secret that social media is something that is controlling our lives everyday. In fact, it is something that comes natural to society to communicate with others through a screen. Whether it is a computer screen or phone screen, this screen is taking over our lives. In fact, according to www.pewinternet.org , “81% of online teens use some kind of social media. As a teenager, I go on Social media everyday, it is something that comes natural to my everyday life. Also, it is an easy way for me to communicate with family and friends. Bizjournals.com states that, “Smartphone users check Facebook 's website 13.8 times a day, on average, and spend a total of half an hour each day on the social network on their phones”. Social media is taking over our everyday lives, without us realizing it. What if social media did not exist, how would people
The research by Beckjord, Moser, and Hesse (2009) also concluded that most students with poor grades in colleges are those that spend the most time on social media sites. This has caused significant distractions during instruction time and has had an adverse impact on the learning environment (Boyd, 2014). Social network sites have become essential in our daily life; however, they have become a distraction for many students since it prevents them from adequate engagement in their school work and reduces their capability of accomplishing tasks promptly (Madden, 2012). Couldry (2012) stated in his research that social media has consumed a large part of our daily life. This has been obvious from poor student grades and their detrimental academic performances due to increased use of social media for nonacademic materials.
I can understand why so many people, especially teenagers, want to use social media, but they are losing time. Time is precious and if they are in school and wasting their time on social media, then they won’t be learning anything. In the article, “Are Social Networking Sites Good for Our Society”, the author talks about how teenagers are throwing away their education ever since the rise of social media. According to the author, “Students who use social media had an average GPA of 3.06 while non-users had an average GPA of 3.82.
To begin, there have been many speculations about social media and how the effects it has on grades. Stated by Lomeli, “some students would rather Facebook then do their homework. There is a lot of time lost due to social media”. As Lomeli said, "some students spend six to eight hours per day on social media, such as Facebook, while completing their homework. Doing work and using a social media at the same is a huge distraction. “Students who use social media had an average GPA of 3.06 while non-users had an average GPA of 3.82 and students who used social networking si...
Social media has nothing but negative effects on people’s minds. Social networking can become very addicting and people can get wrapped up in the drama and excitement of the cyber world. It would only improve our society today if social media never existed to our knowledge. Our society today feels so connected with social media that it interferes with our lives making every task even harder with the temptations.
Social networks can have a negative effect on a student’s grades. When they are trying to complete their homework’s and assignments, it provides the opportunity and a platform for them to procrastinate. Students instead of studying, they use social media while studying, doing homework and sometimes in class. These provide distraction to them as the multitasking provides divided attention. It reduces students productivity; they go to the extent of disclosing their homework to one another, and interchanging course work material that is considered academic misconduct when it is not allowed.
Students involved in activities on social media sites during the study resulted in a reduction in their focus of attention. This causes a decrease in their academic performance, and concentration to learn as well.
Masuma Ahuja, journalist from the Washington Post, said “Teens today, also known as the Facebook Generation or ‘digital natives,’ are part of the first U.S. generation to be so closely identified with technology (Ahuja 3).” Many people believe that social media tends to distract students. With the increasing technological advances, students are encouraged and even required to take part in social media. Social media is a part almost many aspects of a teens life. Social media applications such as Instagram, twitter, snap chat, Facebook, vine, and many more are changing the way teens are interacting which can result in academic struggles. Social media is having a negative affect on students by distracting them from their work and prohibiting them from using their full potential in the classroom and at home.
