The Navigation Wheel is a framework used when evaluating ethical dilemmas related to decision-making. The framework states six aspects which should be used as a guideline to keep track of relevant decision factors (Kvalnes & Øverenget, 2012). I will now use the Wheel, based on normative ethics, to analyze the decision-making with myself (independent customer, unrelated to any company) considering buying a product with documented connections to cobalt productions in Congo.
Law – Is it legal?
The legal aspect refers to whether the course of the action is legal. If the answer to the question is no, regarding both national and international law, then you should not perform the action (Kvalnes, 2015). As long as the products are legally sold in approved stores, as a regular consumer I have to assume that buying such products is in line with both national and international laws.
Identity - is it in accordance with our values?
The identity aspect considers whether the action is in accordance with my values, and if I’m willing to be identified with the action (Kvalnes, 2015). I find this aspect some challenging to discuss, since I haven’t made up some cleare personal …show more content…

Considering the discussion in the previous aspect (morality), the reputational effect of my decision depends on what is the common moral belief. If the conclusion is that the action is morally right, or at least not morally wrong, the action would most likely not affect my reputation. Otherwise, it would. However, this also depends on the media coverage. If the issue is highly relevant in the news, my potential decision to buy such product will damage my reputation. On the other hand, the extreme demand for such products tells us that “everyone” neglects the issue. If this is the truth, my action to buy such product is not violating my reputation and
