A myth is a traditional or legendary story. Myths are widely known about and have many effects on society. Even though in reality we do realize these concepts are myths they still pressure us to “keep up with the Joneses”. These myths outstand the test of time because it is in our human nature to compare ourselves to one another. This is the reason why people think the grass is always greener on the other side. These myths can discourage individuals and inflict unnecessary stress. The myth of a nuclear family can be discouraging to modern society. Despite one's education or level of experience we are still judged based upon many factors such as race, gender, weight, and the way we groom ourselves. Although it is a nice concept that we are all created equally and have the same opportunity it is just not realistic in our society. In some instances, minorities get hired not because of their credentials but because of the minorities laws we have in place. More often than not it is who you know that lands job placement. Gender roles can hurt individuals that do not follow them. It is discouraging for individuals because society makes it unacceptable for men to be sensitive or show any type of emotions. Also for women to be aggressive and be the dominant one. Men are portrayed as aggressive and dominant and are expected to live up to those expectation. Meanwhile if a women shows those qualities she is labeled as a butch, feminist, or masculine. People that those fit into these gender roles tend to be outcasted, bullied, or just become
