One wrong turn can change the life of a person. The Michelle I Know is a heartwarming story in which adolescents are able to easily connect to. The story commence with the protagonist, Michelle, waiting and wondering whether her boyfriend, Rob, is willing to visit. As she expresses her insecurity to Brenda, her nurse, Brenda announces that there is an admirer waiting to meet her, whom Michelle agrees to meet. While holding a conversation with Claude, her admirer, Michelle catches Rob in the doorway. When she goes back and starts talking to Rob, the strong façade she was putting on crumbles and she thinks, “…to think she’d hoped Rob might like her better with the wig on” (22). For instance, the wig Michelle keeps with her represents the self-esteem issue she is facing. It is evident that Michelle lacks self-confidence. Right from the beginning she state, “She rubbed it and as always, her fingers crept upward to explore the terrifying bleak landscape where her hair was supposed to be” (16). Michelle’s low self-esteem can be detected in this passage as she uses the word terrifying to describe her bald head. Furthermore, she makes it clear in how much she dislikes her appearance by thinking, “It looked so awful she nearly cried” (22). However, after stating this, she throws her wig at the IV pole. This symbolizes her letting go of her worries and concerns for physical appearance as she says, “How do you think it would look with flowers painted on it?” (23). This little joke Michelle makes shows the readers her change of thinking and how the wig holds a more in depth meaning, which helps portray the theme in a applicable way. Moreover, Claude symbolizes a light of hope. As Michelle and Claude continue talking to one another, Michelle comes out and says, “How I look. How I feel I hate everything!” (20). She spills her negative thoughts she has kept to herself until now. At this moment, Claude tells her, “You have to be strong inside. Don’t waste yourself fighting the wrong things” (21). This starts making Michelle think and see things in a new perspective. With Claude’s presence she was able to speak her thoughts out without feeling uncomfortable, and with Claude’s words, she begins to open her mind and heart, loosening her grip on the pessimistic emotions within. He was the light of hope in which helps her overcome her depression. He was the one who shown light into Michelle’s darkness.
