In the book the heart of darkness by Joseph Conrad Mr. Kurtz last words were “ the horror, the horror”. There are many ways to look at what might have been going through his head or what would have been the vision he was experiencing as the book describes it. One way to look at it is that he is recollecting on the way he tried to bring civilization to Africa. Another opinion that is expressed is that he was looking back on what he did as to unintentionally becoming a savage. In all reality I think it was his looking back on what he set out to do and how he did it and where it got him and what he became. And the fact that the lack of society helped morph him into what he was trying to change.

Regarding the first opinion as to what the horror that Mr. Kurtz was expressing, that he was recollecting on what he came there to do which was bring civilization to Africa. Compared to Europe Africa was far from civilized. Going by what Marlow described, the Africans that were in the camps were chained together and called criminals and savages they were treated like slaves more than human beings. Bringing civilization to an uncivilized area doesn’t mean enslaving the people in which you intend to help. They defiantly went in the wrong direction. They made the African people do everything for them and treated them like wild animals. They should have helped them set up an independent trading system with other countries including themselves. This would help them setup some income and bring in some new goods that they don’t have there. They should have also showed them how to build things that they didn’t know before adding to their list of things to trade. In my opinion I don’t think that this was the soul thing that was going through Kurtz’...

I finally looked at how the lack of pressure from society and how he conformed to his surroundings and how the people around him acted. And with all this I have come to the conclusion that he looked back on everything, what he meant to do and what happened and how he transformed into a savage himself because of the lack of pressure from society around him. They say that your whole life passes before your life before you die and I think that’s what happened and he saw the horror that transformed him into what he was trying to change in other people.
