A Mercurial Island
(An analysis of three things that went wrong on the island in the book “Lord of Flies”) What makes humans different from animals? If people look closely at the differences between humans and animals, they might find some similarities between the two. Scientists have discovered that a lot of animals share the same “type” of limbs, but they use them for different purposes. For instance, a whale has a flipper, an arm and a hand, that is used to help them swim, and a bat uses its wings, an arm and a hand, to fly. Communication is no different, even though humans use words and animals use other ways of communicating, but communication with one another species is something found in nature. Kind of like humans, there are animals in nature that need a way of guidance from their parents to teach them how to live and survive the world. Humans in a way, need some sort of guidance through their whole lives. Of course at a very young age, humans rely on their parents to help them learn how to talk, read, listen, and many more important factors in human life. At childhood to young adulthood, humans rely on not only their parents, but from teachers as well so that they can be educated and find a fit into society. At adulthood, humans would often ask questions to the elderly to find advice and wisdom from them. Unlike them, these group of schoolboys have no way of advice, or in fact, any sense of authority to take control. With only children ranging from the ages of six to twelve years old, they are too young to really know how a civilized group runs successfully. Although, they have tried their best by using some sort of organization. In chapter two, page 42, a character named Jack says, “I agree with Ralph. We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. We’re English, and the English are best at everything. So we’ve got to do the right things.” So even though they knew that they needed to be organized and civilized, it all broke down at the end.
