What is the circle of life? In a time when the Disney animation renaissance ruled the cinema world, one movie had ruled entirely over all. In 1994 at the height of the company’s own resurrection, Disney released the epic musical drama The Lion King. It was a critically acclaimed movie that has spawned off into a Broadway musical, a spin-off show, and two sequels. I first saw the Lion King when I was three years old and to this day is one of my favorite movies. Little did I know the Lion King was much more than a movie about a young lion stepping in place of his father’s absence, but more of a spin on the Shakespeare play Hamlet. The movie resonates to me now more then ever as I am older and can identify the themes and influences in the movie.
The movie starts off with the rising sun in the African Sahara jungle. You hear a loud yell followed by feedback from back up singers as a choir began to sing what would now be a memorable opening theme in cinema history. As a kid I didn’t know what I was watching as all different types of African animals began to ascend across the land to a huge rock. On this rock we see a Lion couple smile as a weird monkey appears and halts up a young lion cub and all the animals cheer in the presence of the young cub. Watching this as I child I was very confused and didn’t really understand what I was watching. Now that I’m older I realized that the gathering of the animals and the cheering for the new lion cub was a celebration of royalty and celebrating the future lions rein. This scene is very similar in history like we see when royal couples, like Prince Harry’s marriage. The lion king I believed can be forever remembered for the impact it had on the world and they way it took the world by storm. It was an epic and memorable movie that took my imagination by storm. Talking lions and singing blew my mind away. As I got older I could appreciate the amazing story telling and impact this movie had on my life and the way it made me look at the world. Watching the movie sometimes I forget that its an animated movie because the voice actors and the storytelling is so convincing that it could be a live movie. This movie grabbed my imagination as a child and still holds my attention to this day when I watch it.
The Lion King film is not just an animated Walt Disney film but an inspirational movie. I think this is a good movie for anyone to watch because it has a lot of meaning for example, life lessons. Throughout the movie, there were different examples of life lessons such as hope, justice, and perserverance. I would definitely watch it again and children and adults to watch this movie.

Through dance and movement, the storyline were expanded with the assistance of choreographer, Garth Fagan. A well-renowned choreographer for his innovative choreography primarily for Garth Fagan dance, Fagan used his unique style of choreography to the Lion King by combining a variety of Ballet, Jazz, Modern Dance, African Dance and Balinese Dance to suggest representations of nature without making a replica itself and use dance to help tell the story (Exploring the Lion King, 2010). Taymor’s idea of expanding the film by adding in choreographic elements not only will set the overall concept, it would additionally guide the visual aesthetic by allowing dance as the main element that balances musical numbers in all categories: effects, music and so on into the choreography (Bluemental et al 210:1999). Both Fagan and Taymor gave major contributions to the different styles of dance and performance techniques from around the world creating the precision and versatility that is being portrayed in the musical. In order to create the ideal staging of the hunting lionesses, flying dancers in the aerial ballet to the takeover of the hyenas at Pridelands, the collaboration between Fagan and Taymor gave suggestions of how these movements being performed with grace and poise using different dance styles and are cultural based be the forefront of the production(Taymor 148:1997). By looking at three notable dances in the musical, this chapter will analyse the presence of dance and movement being portrayed in the musical and how are these dances create the drama, still giving the idea of moving in an African Savannah. The Lion King is a Disney animated movie portraying the life and times of Simba, who later becomes the greatest lion king known in the land. Simba's rise to the throne is a journey fraught with perils and hardships that make it an absolutely trilling story for the whole family! Although The Lion King is an exciting and entertaining movie, the movie is also a good illustration of several psychology concepts.
...as when I watched this movie. It was a nice journey for me too to imagine the ancestral truth and to visualize the stages of development that has taken place in forming this world. I can feel that this wasn’t an easy journey for those that were witness to the transition between generations. It is interesting to imagine that the world in which we live today was a different world back then. The other interesting thing is after watching this movie, I was wondering about the story of ‘Jungle Book’ how the character mowgli lived among the animals and I compared it to the human life back in the day that perhaps today as we fear tiger and all the other wild animals, may be back in the day humans lived among animals and they may have shared friendship during those days. In the end, this movie was an interesting journey of intro specking my own genealogical truths.
It is amazing how a seemingly educated woman that has won Oscar awards for her documentaries, could possibly be so far off base in her review of the Disney movie “The Lion King”. Margaret Lazarus has taken a movie made for the entertainment of children and turned it into something that is racist, sexist and stereotypes gender roles. She uses many personal arguments to review the movie but offers few solutions. The author is well organized but she lacks alternate points of view and does not use adequate sources. Lazarus utilizes the statement at the end of her review that “the Disney Magic entranced her children, but they and millions of other children were given hidden messages that could only do them and us harm” (118). She makes her point by saying that “the Disney Magic reinforces and reproduces bigoted and stereotyped views of minorities and women in our society” (Lazarus 117). She makes comparisons such as elephant graveyards are like ghettos (Lazarus 118). Other lines of reasoning Lazarus gives us are about Whoopie Goldberg using inner city dialect, the villain Scar being gay, and only those born to privilege can bring about change (118).
The Lion King is Disney's most successful movie to date. Many believe that the Lion King is Disney's only original movie; the only movie not previously a fairy tale from one country or another. In fact, The Lion King is in on based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Disney writers conceal the basic character archetypes and simplified storyline in a children's tale of cute lions in Africa. On the other hand William Shakespeare’s Hamlet was based on the Epic of Son-Jara or Sundiata. This lead to the debate is the Lion King based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet or the West African story, the Epic of Son Jara. Simba, Hamlet, and Son-Jara are all heroes in their own story. All of them must take on a villain that knew very well, but who does Simba’s journey resemble the most Does Simba represent Hamlet, the prince of Denmark, or Son-Jara, the lion king.

Although the movie The Lion King is often times viewed as nothing more than a child-based movie, in actuality, it contains a much deeper meaning. It is a movie that not only displays the hardships of maturation, and the perplexities associated with growing, but it is also a movie that deals with the search for one's identity and responsibility. As said by director Julie Taymor, "In addition to being a tale about a boy's personal growth, the `Lion King' dramatizes the ritual of the `Circle of Life'." Throughout The Lion King, Simba must endeavor through the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth to take his place in the circle of life, as king of the pridelands.
The movie overall had a tremendous impact on my personality since it made me realize that every successful man in the world whether its Bill Gates, Chris Gardner or Carlos Smith have gone through immense hardships, struggling phases and complications in their personal and professional life to achieve the status, prestige and respect that they have today. They could have accepted these problems to adjust themselves with the existent scenario and situations, but the actual triumph of these people lie in recognizing the fact that all these problems and toils are there germinate greater resistance, potential of perseverance and willpower in them in order to transform them into a person who is fearless and disciplined enough to handle any kind of difficulty with extreme wisdom and sagacity.
I chose to view the movie Lion, a movie based on the book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley. This movie is about a five-year-old boy, Saroo, living in a poor, rural area of India. Saroo convinces his older brother Guddu, to let him tag along and find work in a nearby city. Saroo ends up trapped and alone in a decommissioned passenger train that takes him to Calcutta, over 1,000 miles away from his home. Saroo spent three weeks as a street child, struggling to survive and facing many challenges along the way.

Most children in today’s day have a favorite Disney movie that they have watched over and over again. They can more than likely say most of the line of the movie by heart as well. This is because when Walt Disney started creating his stories, he knew he wanted them to have positive and moving endings. People loved the messages Disney sent – they were always positive and taught children life lessons: “The message delivered by Walt Disney’s various projects was an optimistic one that cherished the values of family unity and selfless courage. Goodness almost always triumphed over evil. His works promoted preservation – of the environment, of the family, and of the American way of life” (George 2). In addition to having great messages and life lessons, Disney was very different from the people he competed with during his time. Because of his differences, he was able to spark interest with all sorts of different people. His characters were likeable and fun to follow, “Unlike his competitors, whose cartoons were filled with slapstick and double entendres, Disney’s short features focused on the wholesome activities of likeable little characters who were essentially human in spirit if not in form” (Carey 3). It tells the meaning and the significance of the what the story is happening and what the character are doing. It also enhance drama, when Scar kills Mufasa. And the scene comes with a lot of sadness which means that the father is dead and the son feels that it was all of his fault. It also establish character. It shows when Simba left the pride land, because of his father’s death, and got saved by Pumbaa and Timon, it showed his matured and adulthood that he would be the next pride land king. It also gives and psychological insight showing what would an animal do if it got away of his home town and what made the lion a king. It also show the intensity of drama when Simba and Scar were fighting because Scar killed Simba’s father. It also gave the film continuity when at the end of the film came out the heir of the pride
