The Great Gatsby Throughout my life I have learned so many different lesson from experience and novel that have read in the past. In the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald is about a man name Jay Gatsby. Who’s also in love with a woman name Daisy which is Nick (the narrator) cousin. While Gatsby is in the war, Daisy got married to a man name’s Tom , a man who’s very wealthy. When Gatsby came back from the war, Nick helps Gatsby reunite with his love one. This is when drama started to come into the sight. In the end of the novel, Tom feeding a man to a wolves with no evidence and withdrawled with his wife without a single word. An quotation that shows this lesson is, “James Gatz-that was really, or at least legally, his name. He has change it at the age of seventeen and at the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career-... His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people…” this quote shows that Gatsby childhood was really poor and he have to work as a clam-digger to get money along the shore, and his parents were not wealthy at all. At the age of seventeen he change his name to Jay Gatsby. Years later, Gatsby a boy with not a wealthy childhood turn into the most wealthy man in the West Egg. When the author started,”...Mr.Gatsby had sent him over to cut my grass… A green house arrived from Gatsby in a white flannel suit, silver shirt and gold colored tie hurried in…” This quote shows that Gatsby has become a very rich man in the West Egg, he hired a man to come over to Nick’s house to cut down the grass, he also sent the whole green house over to decorate nick’s place, and besides that he dressed himself up with a suit for a tea party at Nick’s house(page
In the novel Jay Gatsby, the main protagonist, was born to a poor and underprivileged family in North Dakota. He devoted his life when he was an adolescent to achieving immense wealth and rising to the upper class. When he met worldly mentor Dan Cody, Jay Gatsby saw the opportunity to that American Dream. He eagerly changed his name from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby. He had expunged or at least suppressed all the aspects and memories of his past life including his parents. “His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people, his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all. The truth was that Jay Gatsby of West Egg, Long Island, sprang up from his Platonic conception of himself.” (Fitzgerald 98) At a young age Jay Gatsby only had a glimpse at the American Dream through the help of Dan Cody and had already refuse to acknowledge who his parents were.

Summary: Why Gatsby failed to achieve Daisy? To some extent, it may be a tragedy of society and Jay Gatsby’s fault. He was born and grew up in an era of decayed social and moral value. Further more, he can’t know himself and others distinctly Jay Gatsby was born in rural north Dakota and spent his childhood there. Because he grew up in the rural area,as usual he could bear trouble and difficulty in his life. But he was not of that kind of poor children. From his early youth, Gatsby despised poverty and longed for wealth and sophistication. He dropped out of St.olaf College after two weeks, Because he couldn’t bear the tiring and difficult job with which he was paying his tuition. He was hunger for wealth ,but he just had the desire which didn’t work.

No one truly knows the true story behind Gatsby and his wealth. This adds an intriguing aspect to the life of Jay Gatsby. Gatsby lies in order to uphold his image. Gatsby’s poor childhood greatly influenced his admirable dream to want a better life for himself. As depicted by Scott F. Fitzgerald, the 1920s is an era of a great downfall both socially and morally. As the rich get richer, the poor remain to fend for themselves, with no help of any kind coming their way. Throughout Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby, the two “breeds” of wealthier folk consistently butt heads in an ongoing battle of varying lifestyles. The West Eggers, best represented by Jay Gatsby, are the newly rich, with little to no sense of class or taste. Their polar opposites, the East Eggers, are signified by Tom and Daisy Buchanan; these people have inherited their riches from the country’s wealthiest old families and treat their money with dignity and social grace. Money, a mere object in the hands of the newly wealthy, is unconscientiously squandered by Gatsby in an effort to bring his only source of happiness, Daisy, into his life once again. Over the course of his countless wild parties, he dissipates thousands upon thousands of dollars in unsuccessful attempts to attract Daisy’s attention. For Gatsby, the only way he could capture this happiness is to achieve his personal “American Dream” and end up with Daisy in his arms. Gatsby’s obsession with Daisy is somewhat detrimental to himself and the ones around him; his actions destroy relationships and ultimately get two people killed.
Jay Gatsby’s insignificant upbringing gave him reasons to make himself better and constantly look for ways to improve as a person and contribute to society. When Gatsby’s father arrives at his son’s house, he meets Nick. Mr. Gatz shows Nick a page from an old book of Gatsby’s. On the page was a outline of a young James Gatz’s day, including a list of general resolves and very organized schedule. Some of his resolves included: “no wasting time at Shafters or, no more smoking or chewing, and be better to parents” (173). These resolves indicate that Gatsby was trying to get rid of bad habits and be a better person. Jay Gatsby’s funeral is a small service, not because that 's what was intended, but because no one bothered to show up. The word visually stunning could be used to describe the 2013 Baz Luhrman directed adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s timeless novel The Great Gatsby. Speaking of the director, I enjoyed his portrayal of the lavish lifestyle and carefree party like attitude in such a beautiful visual experience. The way in which the party scenes were filmed in the movie made perfect sense compared to the source material and were something I have never seen done by any other directors in a live action film. Another positive for me about this film was the soundtrack. When I first started watching the film I expected to hear old time music prevalent in the 20s. I however was pleasantly surprised when I learned the soundtrack was compiled by Jay-Z and featured many tracks I enjoyed featuring him either alone or accompanied by another musical guest. While Jay-Z is not exactly an accurate representation of the music of the 20s, the soundtrack adds a modern flavour over the previously mentioned beautiful backgrounds and architecture. The story however is where the movie at times falls flat. When stripped down to basics it is nothing more than a generic love story with a few twists added in for extra kick. The characters in the same vain can be very bland and not make you care much for them due to their backstories not being deeply explored. The only character that I found to be interesting was Jay Gatsby because of the mystical aura that surrounds his character at the beginning of the movie that leads you to want to uncover more of this ever mysterious man. The novel The Great Gatsby displays deceitfulness in many of its characters. The deceit brings many of the characters to their downfall. Gatsby had the greatest downfall of them all due to the fact it took his life. In The Great Gatsby , “ Gatsby goes to spectacular lengths to try to achieve what Nick calls ‘his incorruptible dream’ to recapture the past by getting Daisy Buchannan love” (Sutton). At the onset of this book, the reader is introduced to the narrator, Nick Carraway, who relates the past happenings that construct the story of Jay Gatsby and Nick during the summer of 1922. After fighting in World War I, or the Great War as Nick called it, Nick left his prominent family in the West of America for the North where he intended to learn the bond business. Nick was originally supposed to share a house in West Egg near New York City with an associate of his, but the man backed out and so Nick lived with only a Finnish cook.
