The Legend of the Chupacabra has been around for many years now and is almost becoming more and more believable. There have been plenty of sightings and detailed descriptions of what this beast looks like. Many say it stands at about three feet with big red eyes and has shriveled hairless skin (“National Geographic Society”). Even though there are multiple facts and sightings that could potentially prove that this creature is real, some still do not believe it. There are scientist and researchers that go out everyday to try and find more about this creature, with all this effort being put into this, it is very hard to believe that it is not real. There are many facts out there to prove that it is real, the stories themselves prove it, now it is time to convince everyone why they should believe in this furless beast.
In order to prove to everyone this creature is real, stories should be told in order to persuade them. The first sightings of this creature started around 1995, when a man was noticing his animals acting strange on his farm in Puerto Rico. He really didn’t understand why they were acting strange that night, although they seemed very afraid of something. The next morning he woke up to find his two goats dead, and the next couple nights he began his search for what has done it. One night he saw a creature that was the perfect description of what is known as the Chupacabra today. The name Chupacabra literally means “goat-sucker” so from that day on the search had began and is still continuing in Central America and even the US (“Unique Facts about Mexico: Chupacabra”). This is just one of the countries that have been affected by this animal and something tells me it isn’t going to be the last.

Lastly, even though some people might not believe in this legend, it should definitely be considered and never dropped because one day something horrible could happen and everyone would be very clueless. This beast is amazing at doing what it does, and after all these stories one can conclude that this creature is real.

There are various definitions, such as the ancestral homeland of the Aztec people and their descendants or everyone’s individual Aztlan which is ones’ personal sanctuary. A place one creates in their own image consisting of features that show what kind of person they are, while at the same time still recognizing their ethnic culture. A Guatemalan native, a male graduate student that I work with in my research group at the University told this story. He came from the countryside, living in a small village back home. According to him, the story of La Llorona, involving a weeping woman, arose sometime in the 1700s and became well known both at school and home. Some claimed to have actually seen the weeping woman. Some disregard it as unscientific and implausible. No one is sure of the exact origin of this urban legend. This story was told to me and another graduate student in our research group while sitting in lab waiting for the experiment results. The story began as we started sharing our own background and the culture of our own countries when the storyteller decided to make a little shift and started to tell a story told to him by his older cousin--the story of La Llorona:
History usually forces itself into the present in Juan Jose Campanella’s film “El Secreto De Sus Ojos” (The Secret in Their Eyes). Although it was filmed in 2009, the story is an attempted memorization of the violent reality in 1970-1980s Argentina, an era in which the country was rapidly sinking into military rule-ship. Campanella offers flashbacks into Argentina’s dark days, a period where violence homicide, rape and injustices ruled. Through memory, the film narrate a era in which it was impossible to be an innocent person as the innocents were falsely accused, tortured and even murdered for crimes they never committed, all these for the whims of those in power. Even though, the film is set in the 1970s, it does not call immediate attention to the animosity, the hopeless feeling and the constant struggle between the desire to forget vs. the attempts to remember the chaos and confusion of these years. However, through the use of memory Campanella allow the views to portray an almost perfect picture of what happened in Argentina.

Andrea Fildani and Michael Shultz, graduate students in the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences, uncovered the bones of an Ichthyosaur near the southernmost tip of Chilean Patagonia. These rock layers were initially deposited at the floor of an ocean more than 100 million years ago. In their findings of the Chilean boulder, they were fortunate enough to find 17 vertebrae along with neural arches that encircle the spinal cord as well as some ribs. The science community has separated themselves for cryptozoology do to the fact that the evidence that is provided is weak, and wouldn’t hold up against the scientific research. Still some scientists can’t completely dismiss the claims that there are animals that there are specific cases of animals that have gone unrecognized by science (Wikipedia.com). There is a classification system that George M. Eberhart part of the American Library Association, who has written for the Journal of Scientific Exploration. This written piece for the journal discussed how difficult it was to categorize the media materials about fringe science. The classification system that Eberhart came up with has 10 types of mystery animals under the crytozoological umbrella (Wikipedia.com). Bigfoot is a large, hairy, apelike creature resembling a yeti, there are found in Northwestern America. There is another name that Bigfoot is called and it’s Sasquatch. Some people believe in Bigfoot and try to find it. Others who think it’s a ridiculous idea to be searching for something that no one can find. To help me understand and analyze a different culture, I watched the film Selena. The film tells the life story of the famous singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. Not only does it just tell personal stories from her life, it also gives insight to the Mexican-American culture. Her whole life she lived in the United States, specifically in Texas, but was Hispanic and because of that both her and her family faced more struggles than white singers on the climb to her success. Even though the film is a story about a specific person, it brought understanding into the culture in which she lived. Keeping in mind that these ideas that I drew about the Mexican-American culture is very broad and do not apply to every single person in the culture, there were very obvious differences in their culture and the one that I belong. Mexican-American culture identifies with their family rather than individualized or spiritual identities and the culture has gone through significant changes because of discrimination and the changing demographics of the United States.
