Odyssey Hero Essay
The Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic poem written by Homer. The epic revolves around the King of Ithaca, Odysseus, who has just finished fighting in the Trojan War and makes his way back home. Odysseus faces many obstacles and struggles throughout his journey. Both Telemachus and Penelope also face multiple obstacles while they wait for the return of Odysseus. Telemachus, Odysseus’s son ventures off to find his beloved father without informing his mother. Penelope, Odysseus’s wife was alone with the suitors who are all dying to marry her. Odysseus displays leadership through his journey similar to Tupac Amura Shakur and shows intelligence like Steve Jobs. Both Tupac Amaru Shakur and Odysseus shows tremendous amount of leadership. A leader has tons of qualities such as being fearless, tough minded and compulsive I believe both Tupac and Odysseus share these traits. Odysseus displays leadership when he leads his men through many obstacles such as when they fought the sirens and the Cyclops. Odysseus made many quick decisions throughout his journey while still protecting and guiding his crew. A prominent moment where this is shown is when Odysseus and his crew arrive in the land of lotus eaters and Odysseus sends out three men to explore the island. The three men end up eating the lotus, which made them lose their hope for home which means they forget about their goal to get back to Ithaca. Odysseus then warns the rest of the crew to not eat the lotus and ties up the three men and continued onward on his journey, “Any crewmen who ate the lotus, the honey-sweet fruit, lost all desire to send a message back, much less return, their only wish to linger there with the Lotus-eaters, grazing on lotus, all memory of the journey home dissolved forever. But I brought them back, back to the hollow ships, and streaming tears-- I forced them” (IX 105-111). Steve Jobs and Odysseus are both extremely intelligent, this was shown when Odysseus escaped Polyphemus. Steve Jobs shows intelligence through his inventions such as the iPhone and iMac. Tupac and Odysseus were both great leaders. Odysseus led his crew out of danger when he could have easily left them. Tupac lead struggling artists to greatness.
