The largest social change during the Renaissance was the redefining roles of the social strata. In the middle ages, there were three estates: the Clergy, the Nobility, and the Common People. In the renaissance, there still were the three estates but they were morphing and changing to meet the needs of the time. The nobility changed significantly.
Unlike before, they were running out of income and it was necessary to marry into wealth. At the time trade was booming and merchants became very eligible for the nobility to regain wealth. It was also beneficial to the merchants who had wealth but no title. There was also a stratified peasant section. Now there were four distinct sub-groups including Patricians, Petty Burghers, propertyless workers
