In almost every story, suspense is a key in making the story more interesting. Suspense is an aura of anxiety that can build up using different ways. When using suspense in a story, there are different ways to apply it effectively. Different elements of suspense include foreshadowing, imagery and action. In the landlady, atmosphere was used and in the lady or the tiger it used action. In the telltale heart imagery was used. In the landlady by Roald Dahl, Dahl used atmosphere to create an suspenseful feel to the overall story. The Landlady is about a young man who is looking for a place to stay for the night. This young man comes across a bed and breakfast where he can’t resist stopping at. When he reaches the window of the building, he feels as if the sign for the building were staring at him “like black eyes”. The young man was drawn to ring the doorbell before he knew it. A key in creating an atmosphere that the author used here was anticipation. The criminal is put in front of two doors. Behind one door is a woman who will be their bride and behind the other door is a crouching tiger waiting to pounce. A peasant was in love with the kings daughter and in this kingdom, this is a crime. The king sentenced the young man to the doors. The king’ daughter planned to tell her lover which door was the right one. Mystery is just a precursor to suspense. Suspense is used in several places throughout the story. One, when Rainsford is standing at the door seeing a giant standing there silent, this makes the reader wonder what will happen next. Two, when Zaroff is talking to Rainsford about the most dangerous game. This fools the reader and Rainsford about Zaroffs intentions towards Rainsford, and it makes the reader want to keep reading. Last, Rainsfords dilemmas keep the reader in suspense. The reader wonders how he will get himself out of his predicaments.

Will the princess let the love of her life be killed by a ferocious tiger, or face the heartbreak of watching him live with another woman. Stockton uses symbolism throughout the passage, the main reoccurring example being the lady representing innocence and purity while the tiger represents guilt and evil. Imagery is another literary element Stockton uses to give more depth to his story. Lines such as, “The vast amphitheater with its encircling galleries, its mysterious vaults, and its unseen passages…” help give the reader a better mental image of the setting. With this added detail, readers have a good sense of where the story takes place. Long descriptive sentences are also used by Frank R. Stockton to add more detail to the story. Sentences such as, “Among the borrowed notions by which his barbarism had become semified was that of the public arena, in which, by exhibitions of manly and beastly valor, the minds of his subjects were refined and cultured.” add articulation and make the passage easier to read. The author also does an excellent job of using details to add suspense. One of the major examples of this is how Stockton left out what was behind the door. Suspense is a way to gain a reader's attention, writers use suspense different type of ways, for example they change the people's perspective on characters that were good and turn them into bad. “Writers create suspense when a character we care about is in a period or must choose between two dangerous courses of action.” Writers use this so the readers could keep on reading so they could find out what happens. Suspense have readers holding their breath or biting their nails, anxiously wanting to know what happens next.
First, a key method used to create suspense is the usage of the setting. When a character is in an unwelcoming or uninviting location, uneasy or tense feelings can be formed. When there is a sense of not knowing what is around the corner or lurking in the shadows, suspense is created. Also, ominous weather, such as threatening thunderstorms, can lead the reader to anticipate an unfortunate event occurring. An example of an uncomfortable setting is the secret passageway, which is dark, dirty, and most often only occupied by a single individual. Under these conditions many people become anxious, and because of these uneasy feelings that one may encounter, when a character is subjected to these conditions, the reader may become apprehensive, which leads to the formation of suspense. When Dan Needham shuts John Wheelwright in the secret passageway while both are in a drunken stupor, a high level of suspense is created. The description of the secret passageway adds to the suspense of the scene, "The passageway was dark; yet I could discern the scurrying of spiders.
In the story of “The Lady or the Tiger” there is a king that is semi-barbaric. The king has a daughter and she is a little barbaric herself and because they are a barbaric family they have a way of taking care of crime. They will have a lady and a tiger in two doors and if someone commits a crime or if the king doesn't like the person then the person will be put in the dome and will have to chose one of the doors. If they pick the door with the tiger in it that means that they are guilty of their crime and they will be eaten by the tiger and if they choose the door with the lady then it will mean that they get out scoot free. But there is a catch to it if they choose the lady then they will have to marry the lady even if they have a wife and family.

The first example of suspense is the clock ticking. “What he heard was the ticking of his watch” which shows his amplified senses as he is dying. This is suspense because you can literally hear time running out, the time of his life is growing shorter and shorter. Time is not in Farquhar’s favor. At the very beginning of the story he is mostly already out of
