In almost every story, suspense is a key in making the story more interesting. Suspense is an aura of anxiety that can build up using different ways. When using suspense in a story, there are different ways to apply it effectively. Different elements of suspense include foreshadowing, imagery and action. In the landlady, atmosphere was used and in the lady or the tiger it used action. In the telltale heart imagery was used. In the landlady by Roald Dahl, Dahl used atmosphere to create an suspenseful feel to the overall story. The Landlady is about a young man who is looking for a place to stay for the night. This young man comes across a bed and breakfast where he can’t resist stopping at. When he reaches the window of the building, he feels as if the sign for the building were staring at him “like black eyes”. The young man was drawn to ring the doorbell before he knew it. A key in creating an atmosphere that the author used here was anticipation. The reader wanted to know what would happen when he opened the door, and what was so intriguing about this bed and breakfast. The young man meets a woman who offers him a place to stay for the night. Stockton, Stockton used actions to inflict suspense upon the reader. The lady and the tiger is about a place where if you are a criminal your fate is put to chance. The criminal is put in front of two doors. Behind one door is a woman who will be their bride and behind the other door is a crouching tiger waiting to pounce. A peasant was in love with the kings daughter and in this kingdom, this is a crime. The king sentenced the young man to the doors. The king’ daughter planned to tell her lover which door was the right one. The actions used to inflict suspense upon the reader include when the reader doesn’t know what is behind the door, and what happened after the story
