Underemployment and Poverty has always been one of many of the United States’ down falls. Some areas of the U.S endure this burden more than others. The Mississippi Delta is one of these areas. It has endured this burden for as long as one can remember. Poverty is usually caused by ethnicity, level on the social system and by a person’s gender. Antoinette Jones’ book, The Intersection of Race, Class and Gender with Underemployment and Poverty in Four Mississippi Delta Counties, shows the connection of these topics to underemployment and poverty. Jones’ execution of her purpose is reflected throughout this book, but most importantly in her research of the impact of poverty on the Mississippi Delta. By providing the reader with tables and a census’ of poverty in the U.S, Jones shows a connection to race, class and gender, and how they can affect the poverty rate. Choosing to include these important details shows the reader that Jones’ has knowledge on this topic, and that she is not speaking from opinion. Doing this credits her as writer, and also provides us, her readers, with an accurate facts from which she has drawn her conclusions. This makes her claim that underemployment and poverty is affect by race, class and gender truthful and rational. Under one of her topics in the book, Culture of poverty and Blaming the Victim Theories, Jones uses quotes from other accredited authors and their works. She uses these quotes to illustrate her claim. In doing this, Jones provides research of others that coincide with what she has found to be true. By showing the different tables and sources, Jones shows her credibility as a writer of this book by breaking down her analysis of the underemployment and poverty of the Mississippi
