The International Bar Association (IBA): A Story of Leadership and Success

The IBA was founded on February 17, 1947 by a group of 34 national bar associations that were encouraged by the mission of the United Nations (UN), which aimed to establish cohesive systems of law and justice on a global scale.
Today, 68 years later, the IBA is the leading association of lawyers known as “the global voice of the legal profession.” In this article, we will go over the history of the IBA and why it has gained its leading position among bar associations, law societies, and practicing lawyers from around the world.

Within the IBA, we find “leaders who demonstrate persistence, tenacity, determination, and synergistic communication skills bringing out the same qualities in their groups. Good leaders use their own inner mentors to energize their team and organizations and lead a team to achieve success.” (ii)
IBA’s leaders are individual practicing lawyers, holding positions at all different levels of the association, from sub-committees’ officers up to the president. The need for leaders at all levels is a requirement for an association to build and maintain its leadership, and there is no doubt that this has been the stone to build the success of the IBA.
Ogbonnia (2007) defines an effective leader "as an individual with the capacity to consistently succeed in a given condition and be viewed as meeting the expectations of an organization or society. A leader is a make up of many different attributes and qualities. An effective Leader encompasses all of the attributes which go along with facilitating ideas and allowing an organization to grow and flourish, as well as inspiring and motivating those he or she oversees to do the same. A Leader has the ability and almost the reflex action to surface when it is time for a difficult task to be accomplished or a difficult decision to be made. Leadership may be a type of management but a manager is not always a leader. “Leadership is the art of accomplishing more than the science of management says is possible.”
The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. Furthermore, a leader must be supportive of and willing to help their peers build their own strengths. The attributes listed above represent only a small subset of what makes an outstanding leader. One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
Attorneys are always trying to seek upon new innovations that will give the career more opportunities to be successful. People believe the law field is a slow-moving career that does not keep up with new advances.In fact, the law is a field where attorneys have to keep up with new innovations or they will fall behind.Just like any career field, innovation is a must for companies to advance in the future. Attorneys have been around since the ancient times. America copied the legal profession concept from Greece and Rome. Although these concepts were good America made some changes. Lawyers only worked for the government,but America changed it for the people to have some type of representation in court. In the past hundred years law has advanced in many different areas.Law has innovated in areas such as,technology,new practices of law,and collaboration.
Our text explains that “Court administration as we know it today grew out of our organization developments of the 1940’s” (Cronkhite, 2013, p. 124). Congress passed an Administrative Office of the Courts Act in 1939, which had a lot to do with the development of the court’s administration. Efficiency was listed as the explanation as the goal as well as the modern management methods within in court system (Cronkhite, 2013).
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.
This book focuses on the premise that in order to become a leader one must start by acting like a leader. An individual must take on the habits of a leader and then start to act like a leader and others will treat them as a leader. This statement contradicts a lot of leadership courses which teach that one must look inside oneself and find the characteristics that they possess to be a leader. Traditionally one must think about their actions, choose their actions and then act to be a leader. This book says that knowingly changing what your actions are and then act. By doing this simple act of changing your habits first and then acting like a leader over time these habits will become second nature. What Ibarra also brings up is that in a constantly changing business environment that in order to be a good manager changes to character are going to need to occur frequently over time. She goes on to say that this may be from situation to situation, you need to be chameleon.
Judge Advocate General (JAG): These words represent greatness not only in the military world but in the civilian realm too. JAG officers have that type of toughness that is just giving to make you want to respect them. A JAG officer to earn respect in the military. Being a JAG officer lets an individual have an outstanding career due to the toughness of the selection process and also because of all of the hard work that this career requires. International law has generally been accepted and respected by the States to be the fundamental element in ensuring peace and diplomacy when dealing with matters concerning international relations. It should be noted that, within international law, there are various subjects who are considered to have international legal personality, to wit: States, international organizations, dependent territories, belligerent groups, multinational enterprises, non-governmental organizations, and individuals (Walter, 2007). However, the rights and obligations of these referenced subjects were considered and developed as international law itself evolved. More specifically, the international rights, duties, and obligations of individuals as subjects of international law were not effectively established until after the 20th century.
Leaders of the future will be faced with many challenges. As the world changes, we must adapt the ways in which we face these challenges, and in turn grow as leaders. A leader is not merely someone which commands a group or organization. A good leader exhibits the ability to take an average team of individuals and achieve greatness. Leadership is not supervision or leading. It is the ability to inspire or influence others towards the end goal. As Barendsen and Gardner stated (2006), “the best leaders are individuals who, in their work, exhibit three distinct meanings of good: (1) an excellent technical and professional quality and competence, (2) an ethical orientation, and (3) a completely engaged sense of fulfillment and meaningfulness” (p. 266). Another aspect of leadership includes leadership traits such as being influential and inspirational. There also different contexts of leadership, e.g, leading oneself, leading other individuals, leading groups, leading organizations. Some traits that are often associated with being an effective leader include a measure of intelligence, high energy, self confidence, dominance, and a need for achievement. An effective, charismatic leader must lead by example. That leader must be able to know what is going on, the job or task that is being accomplished, and be able to lead the group into performing the task at hand successfully.
