The Middle Ages was dark time which lasted about from 500 CE to the fifteenth century. The Middle Ages occurred in Europe. There was not much food and most people had the job as peasants who worked on farms. It was uncommon for someone to live past the age of 30 if they were not too wealthy. There was always one king who rules over everyone else except the church, which had more power than the king. Castles were introduced in the tenth century during the war period of the Middle Ages which was home to hundreds of people including the knights. Knights were loyal to the king or ruler and fought for the kingdom. Castles had a significant effect on on the Middles Ages and on the wars and crusades that took place during the war period.

A critical part of the castle is the keep. This part would be the home to the ruler and his family. There were two main shapes that the keep would be constructed, either a square or circle. If they built it circle shaped, it would be easier to defend, on the other hand, if it was square shaped, that would make it be more comfortable and better rooms for the people living in the keep. Around most castles is a moat, a big, round lake of water that surround the castle and help defend. According to the Middle Ages packet, the entrance is known as the drawbridge.
