Ziad K. Abdelnour, the CEO of a private investment firm, states that, “Trust is earned, respect is given, and loyalty is demonstrated. Betrayal of any one of those is to lose all three.” This quote in two sentences speaks volume to the reader. Trust is an important and key component to any relationship. Whether you are married, have a mutual relationship, a friendship, or just a family member; trust plays a key part in the relationship. Without trust relationships crumble.
For instance, when referring to the church it is impossible for a person to follow a leader they cannot trust. In some cases, it is impossible to lead a person you can’t trust; but Jesus showed us in just his life story that he could sup with the very one who betrayed him. Howard Thurman stated that fear is nowhere in particular yet it is everywhere. Trust and fear have nothing in common and because of this fear rapidly drives trust away. Individuals dealing with mistrust will tend to isolate themselves because of fear of financial, physical, or emotional hurt. These fears are what prevents an individual from having a stable social life. If we don’t feel safe and secure, we will not trust. Therefore it is important that when in ministry we create an atmosphere that is an atmosphere of safety and security. In other words create an atmosphere where feelings and emotions are safe and secure.
As I stated above trust and fear have absolutely nothing in common and that fear is a form of mistrust. There is a saying that says, “If fear is the great enemy of intimacy, love is its true friend.” Mistrust leads to lack of intimacy. Intimacy defined is a close familiarity, or friendship; closeness. People who isolate themselves stand alone. Due to lack of trust it is impossible to get close to another individual and be intimate. This is important in ministry as the bible says we are many members but one
