the transition zone and night-time economies. This particular area of the capital plays host to a vast array of adult entertainment venues which ‘spring to life as the rest of the city is closing down.’ Strip clubs, brothels, adult bookstores, massage parlours, escort agencies, restaurants, nightclubs and bars are all present, staying open until the sun rises, perfect for any thrill-seeking tourist. Due to the location of these entertainment venues, the people who wish to attend these areas at night often have to travel from zones outside the zone of transition meaning they cross paths with varying zones around the CBD. As well as alcohol served from licensed venues, many thrill-seeking individuals arrive at Kings Cross to not only achieve a drunken state but also to use the environment and ‘resources’ of the transition zone to acquire illicit substances. In 2001, Australia's first Medically Supervised Injecting Centre was established (where users of illegal drugs can inject themselves at a safe injection site in clean conditions) at a shopfront site near Kings Cross railway station. Although evidence suggests that these sites have largely reduced drug overdoses and deaths in the area, the fact that the drug problem in this area is so bad that these sites have been installed highlights the danger and high crime rates of the Kings Cross location and the transition zone itself.
