Feed is a future world where technology is at it’s most advanced level. It is common for science fiction novels to portray a futuristic society riddled with cold predictions about the apocalypse. The destruction of the environment, rampant consumerism, and technological advancement shown in Feed are incredibly relevant to modern society, showing us what we have to change if humanity wishes to survive. The impact of new technology is apparent all around us, especially in the way we communicate, run business and understand the world. This has provided functionality to everyday tasks and as a result, has become a necessity. Over the course of history, we humans have been inventing new and better things to ease our troubles.The invention of the wheel aided us with fast and easy transportation of resources as well as commute, and the invention of the compass sparking the age of exploration and colonization. One person is the same as the other. It does not matter whether you are an adult or a child. In Feed, everyone talks and acts the same. M.T Anderson depicts this when Titus’s father comes to see him on the moon. Titus describes his father as someone who was very serious, “He was being very powerful and businesslike. He was dressed up, and he looked like he was ready to give some orders” (55). This gives us a sense of hope that the Feed is really just a thing that only affects teenagers and as they age, they will grow out of it. But they don’t, it is a vital part of you, a necessity. “Oh. Shit. Yeah, I forgot. No m- chat. Just talking”, Titus’s father says (55). Our hopes immediately drop as Titus and his father has no difference in language and use of profanity. ... Undoubtedly, Anderson chose to end Feed on a terminal note. Feed shows the world an insight of what the world might come to in a couple of years. Similarly, Feed by M.T Anderson and Disney Pixar’s Wall-E presage what is to come if technology annihilates the world. These books caution people of our reliance on technology is getting out of control. People are becoming increasingly reliant on phones or computers. In the novel Feed, by M.T. Anderson, we learn about a society in which everybody has a “feed”. The feed is like an internal cell phone implanted into your brain, except it can do much more. The main character Titus, along with his friends use their feeds to message each other, shop online, play games, and even watch TV right behind their eyes. However things take a turn when Titus and his friends are hacked by a protest group known as the “coalition of pity” while visiting the moon. Their feeds become damaged and unusable. All of a sudden their worlds are turned upside down and they don’t know what to do with their lives.

People all around agree that technology is changing how we think, but is it changing us for the better? Clive Thompson definitely thinks so and this book is his collection of why that is. As an avid fiction reader I wasn’t sure this book would captivate me, but the 352 pages seemingly flew past me. The book is a whirlwind of interesting ideas, captivating people, and fascinating thoughts on how technology is changing how we work and think.

Most antibiotics prevent the growth of microorganisms, which they act on instead of completely killing them. Antibiotics are extra cellular products meaning that they can be extracted for use; Penicillin is an example of this as it comes from the fungus Penicillium notatum1. Hormones are chemicals that transfer information and instructions between cells in animals and plants. They regulate growth and development, controlling the function of various tissues.

Anderson’s Feed and Pixar’s Wall-E. Feed is a book about a dystopian society influenced by a device, called “feed”, implanted in the brains of the citizens. The author describes a group of regular teenagers that venture to the moon for a spring break vacation of partying and going “in mal”. The main character, Titus, falls for a girl named Violet who is not like the other stereotypical teens in this book. Violet received the feed when she was much older and she is homeschooled so her brain is more developed. Together, they go on outrageous adventures until a hacker at a dance club causes them to lose their feeds. Unfortunately for Violet, repairing her feed was practically impossible; meaning, Violet was slowly dying. Together, Titus and Violet question society, feed, and the way of life as they create their journey in the book, Feed. In Pixar’s Wall-E, the world has been abandoned by all of humanity because of the over polluted atmosphere. However, one creature still exists on earth, a garbage-collecting robot named Wall-E. One day, a futuristic, well-developed robot arrives on earth inspecting the earth of any species of life. Wall-E falls in love with the robot, Eve, and when she returns home on her spaceship, he hops on and catches a ride to space. There, Eve and Wall-E work together to save the planet earth in a futuristic love story, Wall-E. M.T. Anderson’s Feed and Pixar’s Wall-E, exaggerate a society influenced by technology using both similar and different story lines.
In Anderson’s Feed, most of the American population is joined to the internet with chips implanted into their brains. This might not be the first science fiction novel to explore the idea that the internet is in our brains, but it does so with an awareness of how that might affect our planet and our biological being in a very visceral, fleshy way. The feed is destroying the planet and interrupts common, basic biological functions. Not only are humans themselves decaying and humanity ceasing to exist, but even the planet has become so polluted that it cannot sustain or support it natural cycles or maintain many populations of wildlife.
Various electronics are frequently used to go on pointless websites, such as Twitter and Facebook, which ruin society’s social abilities. More and more people use social media on the internet as a communication source. This does not apply merely to kids and teens, but adults as well. Using these sorts of websites as a way of communicating causes many individuals’ social skills to decrease. In fact, the advent of the internet is one of the greatest inventions of the twenty-first century. Ellen Goodman’s “In praise of Snail’s Pace” is a well-written rhetoric that exposes the decadence of over indulgence in technology. Goodman is not totally against technology, instead she makes the claim that the world just need to slow down from hurrying; there are some things that are just natural and trying to use speed to accomplish such things only destroys the purpose which they are meant for. Goodman states, “There are rituals you cannot speed up without destroying them” (52). In all, the article is convincing and well composed, although it could have been better if she had added more statistics to represent her logical standpoint. Goodman’s choice of words- “fast in contrast to slow”, organization structure and simplicity of ideas, prove to be excellent. The author's point of view was to inform the reader of the technology change and how everyone will be affected by this change in every social aspect. I thought this chapter was helpful because it informed me of the past, and I realize we came a long way as far as technology is concern.
Technology has changed modern society drastically, both positively and negatively. Technology has influenced every aspect of our life, making it simpler but not necessarily better. Albert Einstein was concerned about the advancement of technology. "I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction."1 Undoubtedly, what has changed the most are communication, the spread of information, and how business is practiced. Consequently, practically everyone knows how to use a computer, connect to the Internet, or use a smartphone. This is demonstrated by the way the Internet is used daily by millions of people to communicate, to sell, advertise, retrieve, and share information. Thanks to the Internet, information from anywhere in the world is at our fingertips. As a result, the advancement of technology has changed our life in many ways including; sharing of information, communication, business, education, social interaction, simplifying everyday tasks, replacing basic skills and jobs.
