Feed is a future world where technology is at it’s most advanced level. It is common for science fiction novels to portray a futuristic society riddled with cold predictions about the apocalypse. The destruction of the environment, rampant consumerism, and technological advancement shown in Feed are incredibly relevant to modern society, showing us what we have to change if humanity wishes to survive. The impact of new technology is apparent all around us, especially in the way we communicate, run business and understand the world. This has provided functionality to everyday tasks and as a result, has become a necessity. Over the course of history, we humans have been inventing new and better things to ease our troubles.The invention of the wheel aided us with fast and easy transportation of resources as well as commute, and the invention of the compass sparking the age of exploration and colonization. One person is the same as the other. It does not matter whether you are an adult or a child. In Feed, everyone talks and acts the same. M.T Anderson depicts this when Titus’s father comes to see him on the moon. Titus describes his father as someone who was very serious, “He was being very powerful and businesslike. He was dressed up, and he looked like he was ready to give some orders” (55). This gives us a sense of hope that the Feed is really just a thing that only affects teenagers and as they age, they will grow out of it. But they don’t, it is a vital part of you, a necessity. “Oh. Shit. Yeah, I forgot. No m- chat. Just talking”, Titus’s father says (55). Our hopes immediately drop as Titus and his father has no difference in language and use of profanity. This shows that the Feed is making everyone lose their identity and just organizes them into a certain type of people, dumb
