“They must face the full meaning of that which they are advocating or condoning; the full, exact, specific meaning of collectivism, of it’s logical implications, of the principles upon which it is based, and the ultimate consequences to which these principles lead” (Rand 16). In Ayn Rand’s novella Anthem, there is the City, a place of rules, restrictions, and unrealistic expectations of equality. The main character of the novella’s name is Equality 7-2521, an individual in a society that rejects and punishes individuality. Equality 7-2521 is intellectually superior to his peers, he is also taller than the others and because of this he is told that he is cursed and he is looked down upon by his peers and elders. With the government winning, people were then forced to become almost robotic in their daily lives. Straying from the routine of waking up, working, eating, working more, going to the theater, then to sleep raised suspicion and more likely than not going to the Palace of Corrective Detention. A quote from Anthem stating “The oldest did not question us any further. They turned to the youngest, and said, and their voice was bored: ‘Take our brother Equality 7-2521 to the Palace of Corrective Detention. Lash them until they tell’” (64). If Equality were to created the society he envisions he would have little to no rules in it. Equality, going from living under strict rules to living in the woods with every freedom one could think of, would have to go through a long and gradual adjustment period. Therefore, eventually he would have some rules but, before that is to happen he would make his society completely rule free without thinking of the consequences. A quote that supports this claim is “Perhaps, later, some men had been born with the mind and courage to recover these things which were lost…” (102). This shows that Equality thinks people are always good and strive for improvement yet, he fails to realize that there is evil as well as good. He believes that humans will by default be good without rules but that is simply not factual in any
