Did you know that suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in America? Well it’s the truth for every suicide there are at least six attempts. Suicide and mental has been an issue that can be caused by social media, and even ignoring the topic because nobody is well enough informed about the topic.
Social media has recently played a pretty big role when it comes to teens having mental illnesses. Social media is a big part of many teens lives they post pictures, funny videos, and basically anything they want to on Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram etc. Teens have an outlet to the world and just like reality, social media has its dark places. Topics like ptsd in veterans, sexual assault, suicide, mental health, child abuse, and even things such as gun violence that is finally being talked about, and we have the ability to make the change but if nobody knows about the topics how can we change them. Suicide has always been what most people or articles refer to as a, “taboo topic,” which basically means to forbid people from talking about it. Society has been a little more open about it recently but we have to make more people aware. We can do this by making social media campaigns, teaching more about it in school, or even making stories available to them and realize what is happening. Parents may feel uncomfortable but just like and physical health condition mental illnesses are not something to ignore. The news always talks about when people get diagnosed with cancer, or diabetes and our parents always talk about when a family member has the flu and everyone brings them get well cards and flowers and everything no matter the illness. When it comes to being diagnosed with a mental illness, that is the time to let the person know that you are there for them but how do you help when you know nothing about the topic, but what happens when the kids and teens don't
