Singapore is known to be a sovereign state. Sovereignty is a modern notion of political authority which is also referred as the supreme power and authority of a self-governing state. Sovereignty is not a small matter in Singapore as history have shown. It is a matter of life and death of a nation and the people living here. A country can thrive only if it has relevance to others and the strength to defend itself. In order to maintain sovereignty, it takes the whole nation to do so but in every aspect, there are challenges and hurdles to go through. The challenges needed to be maintain are social cohesion, economic progress and military strength. An example of social cohesion would be The Salvation Army. The Salvation Army is a values-based organization, made up of volunteers of various backgrounds, that aims to help people in need in Singapore and also internationally. These volunteers work towards building social cohesion include food donation, giving shelters and counselling for those in need. Secondly, economic progress is another factor under the challenges of maintaining sovereignty in Singapore. Economic growth is important in order to allow Singapore to maintain its living standard and to also allow in investments in community infrastructure, defence and manpower. Improving the nation’s military defence is key in maintaining sovereignty in Singapore. Investing in hardware can be an advantage to the nation’s defence as it shows the vigilance and preparation towards the future. For example, Singapore bought 96 Leopard 2A4 Main Battle Tanks from the stocks of the Bundeswehr, Germany, in 2007. Lastly, military strength is also a key factor in maintaining sovereignty in Singapore. No nation can be considered great without an efficient military.
