2. Social Impact Assessment According to Jacquet (2014:1) social sciences has long been interested in the social and economic created by large industrial, land-use and environmental changes. In the early 1970’s, formalised set of practices and processes named Social Impact Assessment (SIA) emerged to document and/or predict socio-economic impacts from such large-scale projects which was developed in the United States through the 1969 National Environment Policy Act, which led to the expansion of the practice of Social Impact Assessment (SIA) (Jacquet, 2014:1). Vanclay (cited in Byker, 2009:12) defines Social Impact Assessment as an assessment in an effort to measure or estimate, the social consequences that are most likely to follow from explicit …show more content…
Secondly, impact assessment is the means to improve equity, reinforce social inclusion and unity, promote transparency and empower the poor and the defenseless in the design and/or implementation of a project (Centre for Good Governance, s.a.:3). Impact assessment has mechanisms to identifying opportunities, constraints, impacts and social risks related with the policy and project design (Centre for Good Governance, s.a.:3). Impact assessment is a framework for dialogue on development priorities among the social groups, civil societies, grassroots organisations, different levels of government and other stakeholders involved (Centre for Good Governance, s.a.:3). And lastly, the impact assessment has approaches to recognise and lessen the potential social risks, including opposing social impacts of asset projects (Centre for Good Governance, …show more content…
They need to understanding of the communities likely to be affected by the project by preparing a community profile which includes a thorough stakeholder analysis; a discussion of the socio-political setting; an assessment of the differing needs, interests, values and aspirations of the numerous subgroups of the affected communities including a gender analysis; an assessment of their impact history, i.e. their experience of past projects and other historical events; a discussion of trends happening in those communities (Vanclay et al.,
The initiation phase of a project is not complete without a clearly defined goal and realistic, measurable objectives that describe the business benefits which are expected to be delivered upon completion of a project (Laureate Educatio...
Identify ways that practicing social workers could assist rural populations in achieving their desired outcomes The social worker could as assist the rural population by introducing a community building concept. According to Smock (2004) community building focuses on strengthening the social and economic fabric of communities by connecting them to outside resources, the goal is to build the internal capacity of communities by focusing on their assets/strengths and engaging a broad range of community stakeholders to develop high-quality and technically sound comprehensive plans. Also, social worker could assist rural population to achieve their desired outcomes, by using the basic principle, strategies and skills of a consensus organizer such as: • Conducting a community analysis in identifying the strength, interest and resources of the community.
Talking directly to the stakeholders will help answer most of these key questions. For IT projects meeting the key stakeholders in a forum to review progress on the project is key to its success. Therefore a well drawn up project plan will ensure that there is enough representation of the stakeholders at the regular project review meetings.
Working as a social worker although challenging, is a rewarding career. Social workers assist people and families to cope with problems they are facing in their lives. To understand more about social workers, I caught up with Margaret Jones, who is on a charitable mission in the country. Margaret, as she prefers to be called, was born in Haiti but after the devastating earthquake, which saw her lose four close relatives, decided to relocate to the United Kingdom where she got her current job.
Needs assessments are imperative to the success of a project. They are an essential part of the planning process. A need assessment guides the administrators as they define the terms of the project. A needs assessment is defined as, “a systematic approach to studying the state of knowledge, ability, interest, or attitude of a defined audience or group involving a particular subject” (McCawley, 2009, p. 3). An effective needs assessment provides insight, information, is objective, and assists in identifying gaps in services.
In order to reach this goal, it will take community planning and funding to obtain the
Although that SIA is considered to contribute effectively to social sustainability, there are three key limitations of current SIA practices leading challenges to achieve it (Vanclay et.al 2011). Firstly, the limitation of SIA in resource development and design. Secondly, people have traditional understandings about SIA, which limits the effective contribution of SIA to sustainability. Thirdly, the SIA lack of a regulatory agency definition and peer review studies. However, in order to fully achieve potential contribution of SIA to sustainability, three ways are promoted to achieve better sustainable development.
Environmental impact assessment (EIA) entails a multifaceted appraisement of the possible aftermath caused by a project or action on the surrounding man-made and natural environment (Wood, 2003). This systematic process requires the involvement of all interested stakeholders in the process and the public, in order to achieve a widespread consent on the planned project and mitigation strategies proposed [European Commission (EC), 2014].
Initially a profile of a community will be drawn up using research methods, surveys and statistics that will highlight the issues faced by the community. Then a plan...
As described by Hatwin and Percy-smith a community profile is ‘A comprehensive description of the needs of a population that is defined, or defines itself, as a community, and the resources that exist within the community, carried out with the active involvement of the community itself, for the purpose of developing an action plan or other means of improving the quality of life of the community.’ (Hawtin and Percy-Smith, 2007, p10). A community profile is a useful and effective way of discovering and developing and understanding about a specific geographical area. Community profiles help to improve service provision and make new plans to reduce health inequalities.
Human Impact on the Environment Introduction = == == == ==
Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is the evaluation of the effects likely to arise from a major project (or other action) significantly affecting the environment (Jay, et al., 2007). It is a systematic process for considering possible impacts prior to a decision being taken on whether or not a proposal should be given approval to proceed (Jay, et al., 2007). Consultation and public participation are integral to this evaluation. EIA is thus an anticipatory, participatory environmental management tool (Jay, et al., 2007).
Environmental management awareness rose up for last decades until today. So in managing and avoiding environmental degradation happen continuously, the are several policy and regulation formed from time to time. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) And Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) is two of environmental protection that being implemented. Most country have the same policy but in own standard of control. These policy primary goal is to ensure the implementation and enforcement
Participation can be seen as “the inclusion of a diverse range of stakeholder contributions in an on-going community development process, from identification of problem areas, to the development, implementation and management of strategic planning” (Schafft and Greenwood, 2003, p. 19).
