Soap operas are among the most favorite television programs. Never think that soap operas were less favorable in Western countries. In the 80’s, there are a huge number of drama series like “Return to Eden”, “The Bold and The Beautiful”, “General Hospital” (which had been the most favorite soap opera since the 60’s) and many more. In the 90’s, “Beverly Hills 90210”, “Models’ Inc”, “Melrose Place” and other similar drama series for teens that became the trend-setter for drama serials producers worldwide,including South Korea. But, it didn’t seem to apply in some countries where the people apply strong cultural beliefs like India and China. We can easily notice that most Bollywood series deliver similar themes like classic romance, along with family problems that relate to it, along with some scenes of parties or rituals as Indians mostly celebrate. Meanwhile, China drama series usually emphasize on ancient Chinese culture or history. Soap operas from Middle East countries also adopt their own standard. First, let’s talk about the culture. Bollywood series themes are similar to those local soap operas in Indonesia like twisted love stories between the rich and the poor, wealthy family members’ conflicts due to the heritage, and extravagant parties or ritual ceremonies. Most Indonesian people celebrate their wedding in extravagant parties or ceremonies, based on both their cultural background and religion. For most Indonesian, a high-cost wedding party represents the wedding couple’s social status. It is a matter of family pride, and it matters a lot. Second, most Indonesians have a strong bond with their religions. As the majority of people here are Moslems, they prefer to watch Turkish drama series, instead of Korean dramas.
