Public health consists of organized efforts to improve the health of populations, with the goal to reduce disease and improve health in a population; society’s desire and specific efforts to improve health and wellbeing of the total population, relying on the government, private sector, and the public, by focusing on the determents of population health.1 One of the determents that is modifiable to help reduce health disparities is nutrition. While nutrition is only one component of the overall health picture, it is a vital element in reducing health disparities such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. It is so exciting to see the world of nutrition becoming recognized as invaluable in the public health arena. I currently work with oncology patients that are receiving radiation and chemotherapy to help provide symptom relief through nutrition management. This is an area of public health that I feel benefits greatly from nutrition education, support, and encouragement. I also help to provide oncology screening programs, obesity management programs, and generalized nutrition education programs to a small community population. It is the hope of the facility where I am employed that through preventative efforts we can impact the overall incidence of cancer rates in our community. I love being able to sit with patients to provide the nutrition education that may help them manage their symptoms, improve their overall health status, or simply provide them with reassurance that they are supported in this journey called life. I feel like God called has me to where I am in life to help these individual either via nutrition or just to share a word of encouragement that may help them make it through that day of treatments. Upon completion of my completion of my Master in Public Health I look forward to applying the skills, knowledge, and expertise that I gain to my current position to help provide my patients with the most up to date and current
