I believe it is important to research different components of student life for several reasons. College is perhaps the most dramatic change of lifestyle one may experience in his or her lifetime. It is also one of the most unique experiences. Mental health has become a critical issue among college students. For this reason, I believe it is important to investigate different ways to improve the mental wellbeing of
Mental Health is a controversial topic among many ethnic and cultural groups all over the world. Some choose to ignore it altogether, leave it alone or consider it taboo, whereas others choose to make it important to focus on in their communities or families, since it is very important towards the growth of the body and self. It is up to the individual, regardless, to get help and assistance for any of their problems if they prevail and affect your everyday life. Self-esteem, anger, depression and stress are all very real things that we experience every day within our lives, or that we have all experienced ourselves at one point of time. To those who do not have any mental health problems or choose to ignore

Mental illness refers to a broad scope of mental health conditions, disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior such as depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and, addictive behaviors. Being health conscious is arguably the most important thing a person can do for themselves during her lifetime. I was quite overweight as a child, so when I became old enough to realize the importance of a quality diet and exercise ritual, I strongly began to enforce them. Today I continue to monitor the amount of fatty, oily foods I consume, as well as maintain some level of physical activity. Until instructed in the course, Dynamics of Personal Health, I had never charted out my food consumption or physical activity. It was very interesting and beneficial to see a breakdown of my daily calorie intake and usage.
The abilities God gave us are truly remarkable. God gave us these wonderful gifts to spread the grace of the lord. People often forget that we are borrowing our bodies from God. Our body is a temple that we need to treat with respect to glorify God. There are many ways that we can glorify god with are personal wellness. When thinking about personal wellness it is important to consider, mental, physical and spiritual health. There are a couple pieces within each of those three main points. It is crucial to maintain a healthy personal wellness in order to serve the lord.
College life is a time full of fun, friends, activities, classes, and homework. All of these activities however, add up to a busy life style. Being busy is not in itself harmful but when the busyness becomes so great that it turns into stress, problems start to arise. The formation of stress leads to many unhealthy trends, such as lack of sleep, loss of immunity to disease, and a change in personality traits. How then can stress in the busy lives of college students be reduced? The answer is a simple one that has long been known; exercise relieves stress. Colleges across the country need to implement a program of required exercise classes to promote the well being of students.
Encouraging enrollment in these classes could include offering them similar to a freshman seminar course where students earn a credit for taking it, or having “bribes” like extra credit or prizes. On the task of healthy habits, schools would be increasing healthy coping options for students around the time of stressful testing, particularly midterms and finals. Late night study events could be a program suggestion, while it casts aside healthy sleeping habits it can provide healthy snacks such as fruit and low sugar cereal for students who would be awake and eating junk food anyway. Another program could be a meditation or yoga class, because it is using low to moderate exercise as a healthy coping method. For students who are particularly struggling mentally, schools could also have a 24/7 hotline where students can talk to someone about their concerns anonymously. All of these ideas are on par with some Chicago Department of Public health programs like after school programs, domestic violence hotlines, and job training for ex-offenders; which means that they are within the capabilities of the
For some people college is where they are at their unhealthiest due to the lack of time and other
The health triangle is a triangle that has 3 different aspect of your everyday life. The most commonly known factor is physical health. Physical health is the body’s ability to function depending on the state of your body and how it is treated. This includes exercise, nutritions, rest, and weight managements. The remaining two factors is known as emotional/mental and social. Although it is not considered by many people, the two factors is just as important as much physical health. Mental health deals with how we think, feel, and handle or react to situations. Social health deals with how we deal with the people within your environment. By blending all sides of the triangle, you can achieve maximum health to your life. But in other words, if you lack a side, it could affect the other 2 sides as well.
While being in college, students struggle with maintaining a stable health level as they’re furthering their education. Immediately as one is off to college and being submerged into an entirely new environment, they’re forced to adapt to self-dependency. The new college student is changing after having the guidance of their parents, where they were told what to do and when to do it. When a new student arrives at college, they are obligated to do everything on their own. This new-found, independent young adult is facing a new world, ultimately altering their health entirely.
Throughout our healthy brains, healthy bodies course so far, we have learned time and time again about the strong and important relationship between our brains and our bodies. Health and wellness is not one single thing, it is a collection of practices, attitudes and ways of being in the world, which help us cultivate the best form of ourselves. Finding and understanding the ways in which we can best take care of ourselves, and then applying them, gives us the opportunity to improve our physical, cognitive, mental and emotional wellbeing. Embodying our healthiest selves helps not only us, it helps those around us by providing a positive example about how to exist within our own bodies, and exist within the world. Throughout this paper, we will
Our society today does not value our mental health like it should. If society would only pay as much attention to mental health, they would be better off in the long run. Think about an athlete playing a sport, they certainly understand how important physical health is. When a baseball player injures his knee, he is out and waits until it heals. But like many people, mental health is overlooked. Most teenagers do not realize that the many things like stress or eating disorders are coming from a poor mental state. They think that if they just ignore it they will snap out of it, this is not true and many times this kind of thinking will only make it worse (Change Your Mind). Mental health is not seen as important as physical health due to misconceptions and stigma behind mental health patients. By increasing the importance of personal mental health, people can reduce issues associated with mental health problems and raise awareness for people who suffer from mental health issues.
Mental wellbeing is a key component of complete health and wellness that is usually overlooked by individuals of all ages. The WHO defines health as ‘a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’ From the definition, to achieve a state of perfect health, mental wellbeing has to be put into consideration.
