“How Nursing Has Evolved” Today we admire nurses for how much time they sacrifice to help others. Nursing has been around for many years, as far back as 1751. It may be one of the oldest professions known. A nurse is someone who has been “trained to take care of the sick or infirm, typically in a hospital environment.” Nurses are highly respected and are still experiencing many levels of growth ‘till this day. Nursing has been around for many years; it began back in 1751 around the time of war. At this time nurses were volunteering their time to take care of the sick and wounded, some would even nurse at others homes, due to the fact that hospitals weren’t founded quite yet. When Nightingale was 16 years of age, she cared for the sick villagers near her family’s home. At this point in her life she knew nursing was what she wanted to pursue. In 1854 she was asked to put together a team of nurses who could care for sick and injured soldiers. She gathered thirty-eight other nurses together to staff a hospital overseas for the British army during the Crimean War. Nightingale trained herself for this great profession we call nursing, as she approached the hospital she knew what steps she needed to take to get her patients well. One must stay on-top of your game and make sure all patients understand clearly. Must be emotionally stable, being a nurse is a stressful job especially in traumatic situations. Although one must be able to accept the fact that patients may be suffering, this may result in death. Great nurses usually have strong empathy for their patients, they can also provide great comfort. Within a nurse’s career one shall be very flexible, you may have to work overtime, late or even overnight
What is a nurse? According to the dictionary, a nurse is someone who is trained to care for sick or injured people. Nurses are well respected because they are in a skilled profession and work to remain accident free. Even though nurses are well respected there are stereotyped every day and many people have biased opinions about them. Some of which include being stereotyped as all being women, a profession many call men gay for being involved in, always working in a hospital, will always marry someone that is the medical field, all nurses wear white hospital gowns and a cap, that nursing is easy, are reject doctors, they are all the same, and they do not make a lot of money.
There have been several inventions and updates that have simplified the work for a nurse, but that does not take away from the hard work they must put in in order to achieve to success. Nurses are friendly, approachable, and caring people who have a passion for helping others. Their work is not always easy, but society has found ways to make it easier using technology, creating happier lives for both the nurses and the patients.
Everyday in this world, elderly, adults, teens or children become ill or get into accidents and need medical attention. Whether these elderly, adults, teens or children are taken to a hospital, pediatrician, specialist, or clinic, a doctor and a nurse will tend to them. The nurse plays a role that is just as important as the doctor. Nurses work very closely with the families as part of the caring process. Every member of the family plays a role in different ways. The nurses are there to help the patient as well as the family step through the illness or injury. They provide information for the prevention of future illness and injury, and help to comfort the patient and his/her family. It is vital that a nurse understands that to be a nurse, you need a certain personality and understanding of the field.

Florence Nightingale changed the whole perspective of the way people look at nursing. From the middle of the 18th century to the 19th century, the birth of modern nursing began. Nightingale was recognized as the first nursing theorist and most commonly acknowledged as “The Lady with the Lamp”. At the age of thirty-one, Florence Nightingale educated herself and trained for nursing. She clarified her environmental theory in her well-known book “Notes on Nursing: What it is, what it is not” which explained the use of environment to improve a patients recovery. Nightingale addressed that anyone who would join the field of nursing be required to certain education and training. After the outbreak of the Crimean War, “she returned to England where she established a training school for nurses and wrote books about healthcare and nursing education” (LeMone, Lillis, Lynn, Taylor, 2011, p. 7). Florence Nightingale, named after the Italian city she was born in, was born to a family of upper class citizens on May 12, 1820 (Florence Nightingale 1820 – 1910). She grew up educated in many languages and subjects and one day, “Nightingale felt that God was calling her to do some work, but wasn't sure what that work should be,” then she began developing a passion for nursing (Florence Nightingale 1820 – 1910). Her parents did not approve of this passion because they felt it was a job for the lower class, but they eventually relented and sent her off to nursing school (Florence Nightingale 1820 – 1910). Nightingale attended a nursing school in Kaiserwerth, Germany in 1851, and by 1853, she had become the superintendent of a hospital in Harley Street (Florence Nightingale 1820 – 1910). After that, in 1854, she was asked to oversee the nurses in the Crimean War and Nightingale went, with 38 other women, to take care of the ill and wounded soldiers (Florence Nightingale 1820 – 1910). This is where Nightingale began her work and developed her theory that improvement in sanitation, and the environment, would improve the health of the ill and wounded soldiers.

She will forever be an influential figure in the world of nursing due to her perseverance and critical thinking skills that saved so many lives during the Crimean War. There is no way to tell how long it could have taken nursing to evolve without the help of Nightingale. In her book, Notes on Nursing: What It Is and What It Is Not, Nightingale described a multitude of factors that must be considered when helping the ill to recover and to have the healthy maintain their well-being (Nightingale, 1860/1969). The first nurses were usually women of the community who were often paid to take care of the sick. The most popular nurses were wet nurses who were women who was ready to have a child, a woman who had a child that didn’t survive birth, or who could feed more that one child. All nurses at this time would work at someones house because there was no such thing as a hospital until 1751, but even then people didn’t think of them as a good and safe place to go.

It all began in the home and moved to the battlefield during any time that Americans where in need. Nurses have always stepped forward to be on the front lines of medical care.
