By concentrating on my media consumption in the past few weeks I have learned that my media consumption is mainly focused around social media. According to my media log the two social media sights that come up most in my media log are Facebook and YouTube. Other media consumption I have been exposed to is online news articles, children television programmes that I watch with my toddler. I work part time in a supermarket and this is where I’m mostly exposed to advertisements as I hardly have time to watch TV shows or reality shows.
Reading through the post on discussion board I realise that there are a lot of my peers to some degree use social sites, watch reality television and everyone uses media to research for their university work. The patterns of media consumption with in our group are that many use social media ,a lot of us don’t watch television or news , most view only reality TV and get latest news on social sites and hardly anyone listens to radio. Throughout these five weeks of this unit I could see in other students’ posts that social media is widely used and it differs from Television and newspapers in a way where it gives public an option to comment on issues and not only hear and read about it but join groups and have discussions, this is what makes it more interesting.

To change media influences we need to change our media consumption .Personally I didn’t realise how exposed I was to media until I had to keep a log of it. Considering that my media consumption is mainly connected to Facebook and YouTube I feel that this makes me in a way oblivious to the world around me. I think this because of I am only exposed to news through what is posted and shared on social networking sites. This is something that I should change about my media consumption. Through the posts on discussion board there is a common view of media which is that most of the media we are exposed to is simply pointless information and according to many its better if we try to avoid it rather than consume it .

Media is very powerful. It devoured the major industries of the modern world. Everything from television shows to social media networks is under the umbrella of almost omnipotent media. The most interesting fact is that people have been addicted to it since long time ago, and this addiction keeps expanding exponentially. What attracts people so much? How media is capable in controlling society so well? Why everyone is so dependent on it? The uses and gratifications research can be very helpful to find out answers to all these questions, as this type of research seeks to understand why and how people actively seek out specific media.

According to a report by ZenithOptimedia, people spend more than an average of 490 minutes of their day consuming some form of media or text (Karaian). In a society that’s driven primarily by the media, we as consumers have been constantly exposed, yet desensitized, to the various perspectives and theoretical frameworks that media has historically illustrated and produced. The most common concepts that are explored involve ideas of race, heteronormativity, whiteness and white privilege, female objectification, class identity, and gender. Each perception is complex and is seen differently in media depending on who you are and the way that you see the world through the lenses created by your own beliefs and culture.
The author and I are experiencing the same point of view on how the media influence people around us. This article is not only written for any particular group, race, ethnicity, gender, etc… I think as a human being, this article is related to all of us. The author has done an outstanding job for all of us by describing as people how the media represent a big problem for our society or our community. I learned a valuable lesson from this article, which I also discovered that central Africa women must have hips, but because of the western image that value is no longer applicable. I also encourage everyone to stay focused and love their culture while watching some TV shows because it is easy to forget about who you are and adopted another way of doing things you never used to do before.

Each year the evolution of technology continues to grow more and more advancing with time. Media not only plays an enormous role in society but it’s become a part of our individual being and our lifestyle. The issue of the media is that it has interfered with one of the most important elements regarding any type of relationship that being communication. Its not only communication but the media has placed a hold on societies life, instead of being productive we choose to watch television not for just a show but for a full season in one sitting or instead of completing our math homework were able to go and plug the questions into a search engine. The extent of this matter has affected the United States whole heartedly in so many ways. It’s become impossible to not communicate and not come in contact with the media.

The mass media has played a key role in shaping people’s lives. The modern society’s use of mass media including TV, radio, newspaper, as well as print media has largely influenced people’s ideas regarding themselves and the society at large. This is evident from their behavior towards themselves and their community as well as their treatment of the environment. While some experts believe that the media is to blame for most of the negative behavioral traits among the active members of society, the majority agree that the media makes people understand and develop a positive sense of association with their society within which they live, making it easy for them to identify and get their role in it.
Social media can be used in our days as a very helpful tool for many things in changing any person’s life ant attitude. It has a positive impact on the society level. Also, it allows for millions to keep in touch with each other and update for all the new technology. And, it helps people who have difficulties in communication with others to be more socialized and stronger and develop more confidence to feel more comfortable, protected and relaxed just sitting behind a screen. “It saved me time and money without ever requiring me to leave the house; it salvaged my social life, allowed me to conduct interviews as a reporter and kept a lifeline open to my far-flung extended family” says Leonard(231).
