“We tend to look through language and not realize how much power language has.” This famous saying by Deborah Tannen, an American sociologists shows how strong the impact language actually has on our life. Most people, especially Malaysians tend to overlook this matter because they believe that graduates who learned language could not benefit in a way a medicine or an engineering graduate does. This is where they are wrong. What they actually failed to realize is that language is an essential tool in helping oneself to advance for the greater good. Learning English can be worthless to certain people in Malaysia. This is because they have set their mindset that learning English would not guarantee a promising future. It is a norm in Malaysia by agreeing that those who are taking science stream will have better job opportunities while those that are from art stream might not have a bright future. This mindset of theirs has caused the development of English to develop slowly in an emerging country. According to New Straits Times (2016), many graduates are not employed due to their lack of proficiency in English when it comes to speaking. The importance of learning English has never been in the back of their mind. Therefore, Malaysians should be open-minded and enhance their cognitive skills to embrace English Language as their second language because in the end their perception is what matter the most. For example, parents should be practicing their children to speak English or get them familiar with the language but at the same time not to ignore their mother tongue. The Malays themselves claimed that they have to stick with the mother tongue as it shows a sign of patriotism. As if speaking and learning second language, English would jeopardize the status of Malay as the national language. Little did they know, mastering second language is somehow a bonus and an added value for Malaysians to survive in this era. Malaysia has already experience declination of English standards and English has become the weaker language of most Malaysians (Tan and Raman, 2007). Tan and Raman (2007) also stated that school leavers and graduates are facing possibilities of unemployment because they are lacking in terms of English proficiency. This can be curbed by viewing this issue from the other side of the coin. Malay and English language should never be underrated because both languages are sort of complement each other and hence could be of use for Malaysians in helping to contribute to a developing country, our beloved Malaysia.
