He was an excellent general and an influential role model to many people. He led the Patriots in the Revolutionary War and became the 1st President. He was the courageous, brave, and trustworthy George Washington. Throughout our lives, many people have showed that when power is acquired or given, it is often abused and taken advantage up.However, George Washington was the streak of hope scattered throughout a world of despair. Before George Washington came into power, King George, The King of Britain, had been unfair and cruel to the many citizens of America, which was a colony of England in the 1700’s.
In May 1775 the second Continental Congress is meeting and the American Revolutionary War has already begun. The congress needed to get organized and fast. The militia’s that were fighting the war were very unorganized even though they were holding their own so early on in the war. John Adams proposed that the army that was outside of Boston be named the Continental Army and just five days later they had their general to lead that army. There was really only one choice as who to choose for the position and he was already there at the congressional meeting and his name was George Washington. Washington had experience in military leadership, he was among the top social elite in the colonies and he was a patriot. Those were the main things that made him a great fit for General. Another very important reason that he was chosen was because he was from the South and the delegates from the North knew they need the South to win the war. Making George Washington Commander in Chief was not only the best option to lead the Continental Army, but he was their only hope.
Here in America there is little tangible evidence of the war in Afghanistan, no visible scars besides the ones involving processions of caskets coming from Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. The mentality though remains. People are tired of this war; they have lost the patriotic spirit that had been created after 9/11. With the war reaching a decade people are losing hope and faith in the government. They are losing the desire to continue in their support for the war. People have taken negative viewings to Muslims as well because of this war and have become very aggressive over those coming from the Middle East and of Islamic origins even if they have been citizens of the United States before 9/11. “We kid ourselves if we think we can be a people at war for a decade without suffering consequences” states James Carron (Hampson).
Before the civil war in Afghanistan, the people who lived in the country were in some real trouble. Human rights were not seen as a priority at all, so many citizens were unhappy with their quality of life. Other countries, throughout history, have tried to help resolve problems by putting troops in the country to help strengthen it. For example, the British government had tried to back-up Afghanistan troops, and their leader: King Shah Shuja, however this didn't work, and almost all of the troops were slaughtered by the Soviet Union army. One of our country’s most significant leaders was George Washington. He is known as the father of our nation and has affected the way our country is today. There’s hardly a person in America who doesn’t know his name. He will be remembered for as long as America stands proud and free.
Throughout recent history, Afghanistan has been a country in turmoil. Famine, drought, civil war and Taliban rule have all had a significant impact on the Afghani people. While this has taken a very negative toll on all Afghan people, I believe, that none have been more negatively impacted than the women of Afghanistan. Having said that, not everything the Western world deems as a negative is also considered negative by the women and men of Afghanistan. One only has to read this quote, “Wearing the burqua is not mandatory, but few women are rushing to remove them” (Germani 14). While the Taliban and al-Qaida’s rule had a great negative impact from 1996-2001 and obviously oppressive to all Afghani women. They were not the sole source of oppression felt by the Afghan females as stated in this quote, “The roots of patriarchal oppression go deep in Afghan society - far deeper than the Taliban or al-Qaida.”(Rostami-Povey, E. 2007)

Life for Fariba Nawa after 18 years was an eye opener and a very tragic experience. Nawa coined a way to narrate a story of an Afghan society, she once knew. The multibillion drug trade now ruled her country. In 1999 they made between $25 million and $75 million just from taxing opium farmers and traffickers (106). It was surrounded with opium, crime, smugglers and opium brides. Opium brides were sold to traffickers to pay off a pervious opium debt. The opium have taken over and damaged the lives of many Afghanistan residents.
Travesties are committed against women every day, in every country, in every city, town and home. In Afghanistan women are not only discriminated against, they are publicly reduced to animals. Women are deprived of basic human rights: they are not allowed to travel outside their homes without being completely covered by the traditional shroud-like burqa; they are not allowed to speak or walk loudly in public; they are not allowed to laugh or speak with other women; they are not allowed to attend school nor work; they are expected to be invisible; they are the ghosts of what were once educated, notable, and successful women. With their ruthless and extreme laws, the Taliban have effectively removed the physical presence of women in Afghanistan. The Taliban have stolen the very souls of these women and have turned them into the “living dead” of Afghanistan. The Taliban’s harsh restrictions and extreme religious laws have tainted the freedoms and basic human rights of the once valued and prominent women of Afghanistan.
Perhaps the most noticeable part of David Farragut's life is his career in the a Civil War as a courageous navy officer. Not only that, but he played an important role in the Battle of Louisiana, Vicksburg and Mobile Bay. His famous line, "Damn the torpedoes!" is remembered by naval officers as a courageous Farragut struggles to navigate torpedo infested waters at the Battle of Mobile Bay. An officer from a young age, Farragut is what any navy desires: a smart, brave, and loyal commander. Farragut was born on July 5, 1801 to Major Jorge Farragut. Jorge Farragut was a Spanish sailor in the US army during the American Revolution. Farragut was originally named James Glasgow Farragut; he was born in Tennessee. A few years after Farragut was born, his family moved to Louisiana. While his father, Jorge, was fishing, he came across a rowboat that held an unconscious old man. Jorge nursed the old man until he died. Later, a man by the name of David Porter claimed the man as his father. Porter was a rising star of the U.S. Navy. As a display of gratitude for Jorge, Porter offered to take young Farragut out to sea as a sort of navy apprentice,also known as a midshipman. Jorge was grateful and immediately accepted the offer. A young Farragut entered the navy at age 9. To honor his foster father, Farragut later changed his name from James to David.
Afghanistan since its beginning has been a place of conflict, despair, and at times lost hope. It has been taken advantage of and lost its sense of identity, which has had a direct effect on its people, and there own sense of what justice truly is.
Ever since the Taliban took over they have been violating the rights of their people especially the women. If seen anywhere alone or uncovered the women get punished usually either getting beat or held captive. This is very common for the women in Afghanistan to experience. The Taliban uses the Islamic Koran book as their way of doing things. The Islamic Koran is a sacred book seen as almost like a bible. The Taliban interprets what they get out of this book into their way of life. However their interpretation of it is more of a punishing form for the women. The official name of Afghanistan is the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Afghanistan is known for its great quantity of natural resources such as coal, oil, gas, and extreme amount of opium. Twenty years of war has impacted Afghanistan dramatically, people hurt and dead due to all the war landmines women and children dying and girls prohibited from going to school (Strong). The Taliban is well known for causing chaos and destruction within their own territory. Threatening and making people fear them are their best tactics to get what they want. They even went as far as almost bombing the capital Kabul if the president did not surrender his forces against the Taliban (Kelley). We should care about Afghanistan because the Taliban uses various ways to violate the human rights of women in Afghanistan including rape, beatings, and the prohibiting of being able to go to school.
