The education and research aspect in healthcare I am going to discuss is disease management. Disease management consists of treatment strategies for patients with chronic diseases, with the main goal of preventing advancement of the disease. Disease management varies over time with adjustments based on changes in the patient symptoms and variations in the disease progression. Chronic diseases are the leading causes of death and disability worldwide and place a significant burden on individuals and their families, communities and the healthcare system (Wilbanks & Wilbanks, 2011). Technology is everywhere today. Various studies have shown that if people were to have access to more detailed medical information, it would be more likely for them to develop an interest in their health, leading to a more pro-active involvement in the decision- making process concerning their health (Pardamean, Anindito, Djoeang, Tobing, 2013). During a consultation, the medical staff educates the patient on health lifestyle choices. With assistance from the medical staff, patients can learn to self-monitor their health. The self-monitoring may include keeping track of meals, regular exercise training, and health program participation. With the help of technology, patients can now enter and record daily information, on devices such as tablets and smartphones. Monitoring can also be done by installing equipment in the patient’s home. This equipment monitors the patient and takes periodic data samples from the patient. Furthermore, the support staff can keep track of the daily activities of the patient, from the equipment, through the web. Patient awareness with regard to health status is increased since the patient would be more concerned about their health due to the routine self-measurements. Disease management may include medication reminders to promote adherence, medication monitoring, and dietary advice. With the help of technology, patients can now access more information about their illness, treatment, and medication.
