Criminal Profiling is the examination of an offender’s characteristic’s, as well as their actions, in order to create a “profile” of the individual. The purpose of this is to obtain as much information as possible to predict what the offender may do next. An analyst studies the crime scene, the victim, and any other facts or evidence in order to identify the offender’s behavior and characteristics. All of this information is examined in order to predict future actions of this offender. Any information is helpful for an investigation, and Criminal Profiling attempts to identify the offender’s motive, their habits, and the offenders Modus Operandi. Criminal Profiling has many uses, it can help eliminate potential suspects or validate information that have already been obtained by law enforcement. It also has the potential to help law enforcement during interviews. The Profile can be analyzed to see if any previous offenders match, and if so the police can check last know addresses. Criminal Profilers can also share the profile with the media, similar to how the media shows sketches of offenders. With the help from the media, the public can share any information they have of somebody that matches that description which can increase the chances of the offender getting caught. Criminal Profiling was created to benefit law enforcement agencies as another tool to assist them in capturing their offenders (criminal profiling process).
