Pornography is nothing new to American society, so why would there be a problem with the merging of the internet and pornographic material? Why would it make a difference if the material is online or in a magazine? In this paper, the issue of internet porn will be discussed in terms of its relation to the addiction of online porn, desensitization to sexual violence and rape, encouragement of sexual violence, objectification of women, sexual compulsiveness, and the reshaping of expectations regarding sex and body images. Internet porn has become increasingly popular, and one reason for this is because it is easily accessible and can be kept relatively private. There is no need to order any materials or go to a store to buy the magazines. With internet porn, viewers can access a multitude of materials right on the internet. The variety is endless and the gratification is instant. According to The US News & World Report, 17.5 million surfers visited porn sites from their home computers in January of 2004, which is a 40% increase from 4 months earlier (Dew, 2004). The easy access and variety of materials has been known to cause addiction in online viewers, as pointed out by The BBC Website, “Internet porn is available in much larger quantities than traditional porn and at a cheaper cost…this may be a good case of having ‘too much of a good thing’”(Kadu, 2004). The current numbers of people who are addicted to porn are unclear, but the estimate according to the Minnesota Family Institute (2004) runs as high as 5 million. As with other forms of addiction, this creates the opportunity for problems in other areas of the addict’s life. IX was established many people thought that women were more concerned and involved in getting married, and having children rather than continuing their education. Until the early 70's, many colleges and universities were reluctant to admit women into their student body. Fortunately, the unfairness in admissions of higher education for females that was prominent prior to the early 70’s is less common. Women now receive undergraduate and graduate degrees at a significantly higher rate than before the adoption of the Title IX's statutes. It's more common today for women to take professions that were more commonly dominated by males. Title IX is an important legislation because it helps increase women's access to higher education, protect against sexual harassment, and help increase the number of female athletics
Title IX was a social justice landmark for women in the United States. Women who directly benefited from Title IX were athletes, as it gave them opportunities to participate in sports in schools, receive the same amount of funding as the male sports programs, and for the first time gave women the opportunities to earn scholarships for sports. Indirectly, Title IX had an impact on all women in the United States, because it entitled them equal opportunity to education and created a provision against sexual discrimination. Title IX changed the expectations of women by giving them the opportunity to choose and compete, athletically, scholastically, professionally, politically, economically and socially.
Pornography is considered by many to be an unwelcome and distasteful part of our society. However, I argue that it is necessary to voice the unpopular viewpoints, under the Constitution. This paper is a defense of pornography as a constitutional right of free expression, under the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights. In illustrating this argument, I will first define pornography as a concept, and then address central arguments in favor of pornography remaining legal and relatively unregulated – such as the development of the pornography debate throughout modern US law, and how activist groups address the censorship of adult entertainment.
On June 23, 1972 Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 was signed into law by the President (20 U.S.C. Sections 1681-1688). The purpose was to protect people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive Federal financial aid. Title IX states that “(n)o person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or subject to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance”. For years, many college sports fans only knew that Title IX existed because it promoted women’s sports, sometimes at the expense of men’s sports programs. While I am sure this would be a fascinating paper in itself, I would like to focus on the Office of Civil Rights expansion of Title IX in Colleges and Universities during the Obama Administration as a mechanism to curtail
Title IX legislation, passed in 1972, expanded the rights of an individual in ed ucational opportunities. It equalized academic prospects for individuals by ensuring that males and females must have equal access to educational possibilities. Title IX is traditionally attributed to the growth of athletic programs for women by demanding that programs for women are given the same amount of money and attention as men's teams. However, Title IX has dealt with a plethora of equality issues in education that have been overshadowed, for the most part, by the legislation's impressive impact on women in sports.
With over 759 million registered domain names, the Internet has proved to be the definitive source of information (Hunter). Covering a full spectrum of subjects and services, it is an entity that we can not do without. However, despite all this usefulness, more than 14 percent of all websites are dedicated to pornography (Ward). To further worsen the matter, more than 13 percent of all searches made daily are
Pornography can be found ranging anywhere from simple and traditional sexual encounters all the way to people playing out some of the more obscure and wild sexual fantasies. This allows people to explore wild sexual fantasies in the privacy of their own home. "Internet pornography has become so popular partly because it offers a level of anonymity never available before." (“Introduction to online Pornography: Opposing Viewpoints”) From the privacy of one’s own computer, there is access to an infinite data base of any porn imaginable reachable by merely logging into the internet. Some people even find it to be arousing to post their own “amateur” porn, whether it is in the form of e...
Around the year 1975, pornography took on the meaning we accept today. Therefore, it is a fairly young phenomenon, but it has spread like wildfire through its secrecy and silence (Kendrick 1). Many find pornography harmless, a step toward greater sexual liberation, a way to set free the secret parts of the soul (Griffin 1). If only they knew the secret they would discover would be an addiction that has the power to last forever! Pornography grows into people's lives, leading to destruction of their marriages, families, and sense of heterosexual love.... ...
Pornography is an act of male supremacy and it becomes difficult to see the true harm of pornography because it has become deeply rooted into our everyday lives (Jeffreys 1990). Though few can see the damages that pornography has caused our culture, it becomes obvious when one delves into the problems that come from excessive viewership of pornography. Professor Freda Briggs believes that pornography is one reason why young children are sexually abusing other children in school (Knowles 2014). Addiction is also another serious result from the excess amount of porn. Although it may not be taken as serious as addiction to drugs or alcohol, it is still a very real issue facing many men. Gail Dines believes that young men who are addicted to porn “neglect their schoolwork, spend huge amounts of money they don’t have, become isolated from others, and often suffer depression,” (Dines 2010). Dr. William Struthers confirms some of these and adds that men who use porn become controlling, highly introverted, have high anxiety, narcissistic, curious, have low self-esteem, depressed, dissociative, and become easily distracted (Struthers 2010). It also teaches men to view women as objects and not as humans, and teaches them that sex is something a man does for himself by using another women as the means to pleasure, almost like the woman is more of a product to use than a person
Based on IATA fact sheet of World Industry Statistics, the total net profits of world airlines have shown remarkable instability over the past 24 years. From 1990 to 1993, due to the Gulf War and subsequent economic recession, the world airline industry announced four consecutive years of losses totaling over $22 billion. In the late 1990s, it returned to record profitability with total net profits in excess of $25 billion being reported by world airlines from 1995 to 1999. Even more dramatic was the industry’s plunge into record operating losses and a financial crisis between 2000 and 2005, with cumulative net losses of $40 billion. There are various factors that influence the airline performance such as efficacy of capacity, structural changes, increase in competition, economy slowdown, high labor, as well as, high fuel prices which jeopardize the aviation industry.
Pornography involves books, magazines, videos, and devices and has moved from the periphery of society into the mainstream through the renting of video cassettes, sales of so-called "soft-porn" magazines, and the airing of sexually explicit movies on cable television. To some, pornography is nothing more than a few pictures of scantily-clad women in seductive poses. But pornography has become much more than just photographs of nude women.
In recent years, the term pornography has been primarily associated with that which is accessed and streamed over the internet, rather than the literal definition of, “obscene writings, drawings, photographs, or the like, especially those having little or not artistic merit.” This form of visual pornography is a popular and successful business as it is viewed for fulfilling pent up sexual desires, however it promotes the act of having multiple sex partners without the need of any commitment. Although it is for this reason that this business is permitted, there are many overlooked, long – term affects that have become topics of controversy. Not only does pornography affect those who indulge in it, but it can influence those who divulge in it as well, especially those who access it at an early age. Thus, I believe pornography is immoral because it negatively influences opinions regarding sex, it promotes more violence in sex, and it creates a difficulty to live a normal lifestyle for those who work in the porn industry.
The United States increases in selling pornographic material each year. Every second, approximately $3075 is being spent on pornography, and 28 thousand internet viewers are viewing internet porn. (Internet Filter Review, 2006) According to O.Winfrey (2009) pornography is not only a billion dollar business, but also experience an annual sale of above 50 USD per year. Focusing on different aspect of pornography other than lust, pornography is not only destructive, but can also be dangerous for various reasons. Pornography gives an unrealistic depiction o...
To some, pornography is nothing more than a few pictures of scantily clad Women in seductive poses. But pornography has become much more than just Photographs of nude women. Computer technology is providing child molesters and child pornographers with powerful new tools for victimizing children. Pornography as "the sexually explicit depiction of persons, in words or images, Sexual arousal on the part of the consumer of such materials. No one can prove those films with graphic sex or violence has a harmful effect on viewers. But there seems to be little doubt that films do have some effect on society and that all of us live with such effects.
The oldest child has all of their parents’ attention until the next sibling is born. The parents may be more controlling and protective of this child, while also making the most mistakes. They tend to expect more from the oldest than from any of their other children. First born children are often expected to “set a good example” for their younger siblings and to help their parents take care of the younger children. All of this tends to make the oldest very responsible, perfectionistic, and nurturing. They are also more likely to be seen as “natural born leaders” and to seek out careers which require strong leadership skills such as CEOs, politicians, and astronauts. More than half of all US presidents were first born children while twenty one out of twenty three of America’s first astronauts were also first born children (S...
