In the novel The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins, Katniss, a young woman who lives in District 12 of Panem, which is post-apocalyptic North America, struggles to put food on the table for her family. A country where the Capitol oppresses its citizen by keeping them fenced off from the outer world. The Capitol also forces a teenage boy and girl ages 12 to 18 from each district to fight in a blood sport that Capitol views as entertainment known as, The Hunger Games. During the reaping of the 74th Hunger Games Katniss’s sibling, Prim, is chosen as the female contestant for the game, which in turn makes Katniss volunteer herself to take Prims place. This sort of mistreatment by the Capitol is what causes Katniss Everdeen to change from
She’s someone who doesn’t follow the rules set by the Capitol. For example, she leaves the district limits, daily even though there are dangerous animals where she hunts, it does help her in providing some food for her family. Katniss is able to gather and hunt for herself and her family because she remembers what her father taught her when she was young, “Inside the wood they roam freely, and there are added concerns like venomous snakes, rabid animals, and no real paths that follow. But there’s also food if you know how to find it” (Collins 5). This makes Katniss keep herself closed off and avoids contact with other people, besides her close friend Gale. This shows that Katniss is an independent woman who doesn’t trust people, because showing people that you can provide for yourself will bring unwanted

Rue also helped cure Katniss tracker jacker stings by chewing some herbs and placing them on the wounds. Katniss states that she trusts Rue “Because she’s a survivor, and I trust her, and why not admit it? She reminds me of Prim” (201). Later on during the games Katniss finds out that Peeta has abandoned the alliance he had with the other careers and is missing. She eventually ends up finding him tired and injured hidden by some rocks. She takes care of him and shows him some affection because she states that “Being one of the star-crossed lovers from District 12 it’s an absolute requirement if I want any more help from sympathetic sponsors” (247). This is also when she realizes all that Peeta has done was to protect Katniss from the other careers which ends up making Katniss actually trust Peeta and feel some real emotional connection with him. This showed that even though Katniss was showing affection toward Peeta she really felt like she could trust
