Novel Response to The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is an intriguing novel that leaves the reader dying to know what will happen next. It takes place in the ruins of North America known as the country of Panem which is a shining Capitol, surrounded by twelve outlying districts. A sixteen-year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen lives in District 12, a poor coal-mining district on the outskirts of Panem. This tough young girl selflessly chooses to take her younger sisters place when she is chosen for the annual Hunger Games. The different people she meets along the way help her progress successfully through the games. Also, the suspense in the story keeps the reader from being able to put the novel down. Due to her determination and strong survival skills, Katniss is able to overcome all the obstacles thrown at her during the Hunger Games. She ends up as one of the victors along with Peeta.
Finally, the lessons of power, love, and sacrifice make this novel one to remember. The controlling power that the Capitol has over the outlying districts is extremely harsh. They force teenage tributes from each district to kill each other every year just as a reminder that the districts cannot rebel. However, the little power that Katniss has makes a statement throughout the districts when she buries Rue, a female tribute from District 11. She reminds the Capitol that the tributes are humans as well, and that their lives matter. Love is another key theme in the novel. The romance between Peeta and Katniss is not full-hearted. Peeta genuinely has cared about Katniss his whole life and he proves that by describing when his crush for Katniss started.

Summary: The Mockingjay is the third book in the Hunger Games series and is the final book to the series. In this book, Katniss Everdeen and her family and friends start to live in a strict new world now as District Thirteen. There were thirteen districts at first and then a war between District Thirteen and the Capitol began. The Capitol lost and they came to an agreement that District Thirteen would act as if they had lost but in exchange got their own land. After District Thirteen stole Katniss from the 75th Hunger Games arena the Capitol bombed Katniss’s district and they had to move to District Thirteen and begin a new life under tight lockdown of the district in fear of attack. Katniss is asked to pose as the Mockingjay which is the face of the rebellion. In exchange for her work she asked for some of her friends in the Capitol to be granted immunity from the war crimes that all people in the Capitol will face. After Katniss poses as the Mockingjay she then leads all of the twelve districts into rebellion. The only city left is the Capitol, in the center of the country. She is led into urban warfare in the Capitol and Finnick (one of the previous Hunger Games members) is killed. After she reaches the president’s mansion she sees a hovercraft approach and drop care packages to kids that are actually bombs and Katniss’s sister, Prim dies in the explosion while helping the children. Once she leaves her home and sent to the capital to start training for the Games, Katniss meets her mentor. Before the competition, she meets her mentor, Haymitch. He helps her by providing advice on how to survive in the competition.

The rules of the games are simple, you must be the last survivor; it is a fight to the death.
