If what does not kill us makes us stronger, then Hope Solo is made of steel. In Hope Solo’s novel Hope Solo: A Memoir of Hope, she is not afraid to speak the truth no matter what people may think of her. Hope learned during her younger years to be open to different ideas and not get discouraged by life’s challenges. She has faced countless obstacles in both her personal life and professional career. Although her persona is very intimidating, Hope is a daddy’s girl, honest, and straight-forward. Throughout her career, many people have mistaken her candid remarks as hateful comments, and she has been labeled as being difficult and bombastic. Even though her critics argue that she is outspoken and lacks maturity as a sportsman, Hope Solo shows in her biography Hope Solo: A Memoir of Hope that she is an inspirational female athlete because she has risen above extreme adversity and continuously challenges herself to be the best.
Hope Amelia Solo was born on the 30th of July in 1981 in Richland, Washington. As a young child, she was a forward for a soccer team and showed amazing potential at a young age. She scored 109 goals while in this position and was peerless. Her real career did not start until her high school years which led to her being named an All-American twice by Parade magazine. Her college accomplishments led to her being named to the 2004 Olympic team (“Hope” 1). Hope attended the Univeristy of Washington for all four years of her college career. While in college, she earned NSCAA All-American honors in her last three years. Star Wars was a low budget science-fiction film that became a blockbuster box office success. The movie has been extremely popular with all cultures and ages for several decades. As well as being popular Star Wars also conveys many important themes. I believe one of the more prominent themes throughout the movie is the classic hero journey. The hero journey is a major part of stories and myths throughout the world. Both primitive and modern cultures use hero journeys as the basis for stories. The three main parts of a hero journey are the departure, the initiation, and the return. Luke’s departure is caused by a variety of factors.

“Never give up! Failure and rejection are only the first step to succeeding”. These were the words that the late Jimmy Valvano gave to his audience at the ESPY Awards on March 3rd 1993. The ESPY Awards are sponsored by ESPN each year for those recognized for their achievement in sports. Almost 21 years ago, “Jimmy V” as he was known gave his speech because he was not told to; rather, he gave his speech because he was qualified to influence a revolution. Jimmy Valvano was a prestigious collegiate basketball coach at North Carolina State University. It was at North Carolina State, where he led his Cinderella team to a national championship in 1983. Just nine years later in 1992 he was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer that ultimately claimed his life at the age of 47. Shortly before his tragic death he received the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. After accepting the first Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the first ESPY awards, Jimmy V went up onto the stage humbled and obviously very weak to deliver something long awaited. Through his effective emotional tone, and overall organization of the speech, Valvano influenced a community to keep on fighting, and never let anything get in the way of chasing ones dreams.

One often hears tales of humanity’s greatest feats from friends, family, and the media - whether it is a groundbreaking scientific discovery or a miraculous survival story, it is only natural for humans to marvel at which they cannot comprehend, including the awe-inspiring deeds accomplished by other humans. However, if one merely stops to reflect upon these aforementioned feats, one will quickly realize that every single individual who has accomplished one of them, from Marie Curie to Usain Bolt to Queen Elizabeth I, had a single thing in common: spirit. In fact, said individuals are not unlike the protagonist of Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, Louis Zamperini, who possesses the same iron will and drive. In Unbroken, Louis “Louie” Zamperini withstands the countless trials and tribulations of war, both big and small, all with the help of hope, his undying spirit, and shatterproof dignity. Additionally, despite all of the hardships he faces, he finds it within himself to forgive his tormentors when his ordeals are finally over. If there is anything that Louie’s story teaches readers, it is that the human spirit is incredibly strong - one can endure almost anything if one’s dignity remains intact.
Like in the song Don’t Rain on My Parade sang by Lea Michele says, “I know what I want and I’ve got the perseverance to do it and nothing is going to stand in my way.” Then it says “And if I'm fanned out Your turn at bat, sir At least I didn't fake it Hat, sir, I guess I didn't make it But whether I'm the rose Of sheer perfection Or freckle on the nose Of life's complexion The cinder or the shiny apple of its eye I gotta fly once I gotta try once Only can die once, right, sir?” This song tells me not to let anyone bring me down and, no matter what I can accomplish anything I put my mind to. It also tells me that it will take my trying to know if something is for me or if it is going to lead me to my future.

The Hero’s Journey is a basic template utilized by writers everywhere. Joseph Campbell, an American scholar, analyzed an abundance of myths and literature and decided that almost all of them followed a template that has around twelve steps. He would call these steps the Hero’s Journey. The steps to the Hero’s Journey are a hero is born into ordinary circumstances, call to adventure/action, refusal of call, a push to go on the journey, aid by mentor, a crossing of the threshold, the hero is tested, defeat of a villain, possible prize, hero goes home. The Hero’s Journey is more or less the same journey every time. It is a circular pattern used in stories or myths.
Joseph Campbell defines a hero as “someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself ” (Moyers 1). The Hero’s Journey consists of three major parts: the separation, the initiation and the return. Throughout a character’s journey, they must complete a physical or spiritual deed. A physical deed involves performing a daunting and courageous act that preserves the well-being of another person. A spiritual deed calls for action that improves another individual’s state of mind. While fulfilling their journey, a hero must undergo a psychological change that involves experiencing a transformation from immaturity into independence and sophistication.Campbell states that these events are what ultimately guides a hero into completing
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger! Media has strong themes of rising stronger. Being strong in times of hardship is important for people to recover from wrongs done against them. This is very apparent in music, like in the songs Superwoman by Alicia Keys and Skyscraper by Demi Lovato.
