The History of Basketball
History of Basketball Dr. James Naismith is known world-wide as the inventor of basketball. He was born in 1861 in Ramsay township, near Almonte, Ontario, Canada. The concept of basketball was born from his school days in the area where he played a simple child's game known as duck-on-a-rock outside his one-room schoolhouse. The game involved attempting to knock a "duck" off the top of a large rock by tossing another rock at it. Naismith went on to attend McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. After serving as McGill's Athletic Director, he moved on to the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA in 1891 where the sport of basketball was born. In Springfield, Naismith was faced with the problem of finding a sport that was suitable for play inside during the Massachusetts winter for the students at the School for Christian Workers. Naismith wanted to create a game of skill for the students instead of one that relied solely on strength. He needed a game that could be played indoors in a relatively small space. The first game was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets used as goals. Naismith devised a set of thirteen rules of basketball: The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands, but never with the fist. A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on which he catches it, allowance to be made for a man running at good speed. The ball must be held in or between the hands. The arms or body must not be used for holding it. No shouldering, holding, pushing, striking or tripping in any way of an opponent. The first infringement of this rule by any person shall count as a foul; the second shall disqualify him until the next goal is made or, if there was evident intent to injure the person, for the whole of the game. No substitution shall be allowed. A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violations of Rules 3 and 4 and such as described in Rule 5. If either side make three consecutive fouls it shall count as a goal for the opponents (consecutive means without the opponents in the meantime making a foul). goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the ground into the basket and stays there, providing those defending the goal do not touch or disturb the goal.

Basketball has been around for a long while. It was first established in 1891 by James Naismith. James Naismith was once the basketball coach at Kansas University. When he invented the sport he used a peach basket as the goal. When it first originated every time they would score they’d be required to call the janitor out with a ladder to get the ball down. After a few months they cut the bottoms of the basket out.
Basketball was invented in 1891, womens basketball started less than a year later. A gymnastics instructor, Senda Bernson Abbott, adapted Dr.James Naismith’s basketball rules and introduced the game at Smith College. The first

Most of the rules Dr. James made , are still used today. Out of the 13 rules Dr. James made 9 are still in place today, the rest were just thrown to the side. The first team had 18 players, and the team was split with 9 people on each side. Dr. James didn’t have the money to pay for the real rubber balls back then so he just used soccer balls. Since the game was new to all the players the final score was 1-0 and was played for a whole 30 minutes with no stopping.Of course being that the sport was getting really popular, other people and organizations had to test the game of basketball out. According to Bran “Most of the YMCA in the Norther Eastern United States, and Southern Canada had facilities to accommodate players.” The first competitive leagues were local, within the larger cities of the east coast. On November 7, 1896 the first professional basketball game was played in Trenton New Jersey between the Trenton YMCA and the Brooklyn YMCA. They played at the Trenton Masonic temple, and they charged admission into the game. “All of the players got paid $15 dollars, Fred Cooper was the only player that got paid $16, by him getting paid $16 dollars, he became the first highest paid player” Bran
Basketball originated in 1891 when future Presbyterian minister named James Naismith (1861-1939) was assigned to teach a P.E. class at Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. The class had been noted for being disorderly, and Naismith was told to invent a new game to keep the young men occupied. Since it was winter and very cold outside, the game had to be played indoors was desirable. Naismith had a flashback to his childhood in Canada, where he and his friends had played "duck on a rock,”. The game involved trying to knock a large rock off a boulder by throwing smaller rocks at it. He also recalled watching rugby players toss a ball into a box in a gym. He had the idea to nail up boxes and the players would attempt to throw a ball. When he couldn't find boxes he used peach baskets. According to Alexander Wolff, in his book 100 Years of Hoops, Naismith drew up the rules for the new game in "about an hour." Most of them still apply in some form of todays. Basketball was a simple game that could be played indoors during winter. Naismith spread the rules freely, and there was a need for Naismith's legacy included the first great college basketball coach, Forrest "Phog" Allen (1885-1974), who played for Naismith at the University of Kansas and went on to win 771 games as a coa...
Can you imagine playing the game of basketball without a three point line? Basketball has constantly changed throughout history and continues to change today. The National Basketball Association has risen in popularity and is now one of America’s most popular sports. Because basketball continues to be a popular sport, a fan should learn about the origin of the NBA, how the game evolved from the late 1940s to the early two thousands, and how the players today impact the way it is played.
What if basketball was never invented? What would kids do in their free time instead of basketball? To understand the origins of basketball and how it developed over the years, a closer look at basketball history is necessary.
On November 6, 1861 the great James Naismith was born in Ontario, Canada to Mr. and Mrs. John and Margaret Naismith. As a child James wasn’t very successful in school but excelled in physical activates, this triggered him to drop out of school and become a lumberjack. Soon after this he realized that he needed to turn his life around, so he went back to school to receive a degree in physical education. He later earned a job at a local YMCA in Springfield and was immediately put in task of finding a way to keep men in shape during the winter seasons. After many unsuccessful attempts he finally decided on a sport in which the players must throw a soccer ball into a peach basket on either side of the gymnasium. So on December 21, 1891 the newly formed game known as basketball had its first official game, the final score 1-0. As time passed different basketball leagues were formed the Basketball Association of America was founded in 1946 by owners of the major ice hockey arenas in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and Canada. In 1949 the BAA joined another basketball league, the NBL, to create the currant league, the NBA. The NBA was a great success with many people. This success would led it to what it is today, a multi-billion dollar association known for consisting in a wide variety of elite athletes.
Basketball is defined as a game where two teams of five play each on a rectangular court, usually indoors (Basketball/Sport). Basketball was invented by James Naismith on December 1, 1891 (Basketball/Sport). The object of basketball is to shoot the basketball through the opposing team’s basket and to out-score them by end of the regulation time limit. If the score is tied at this time, the game will go into overtime until one team wins. While reading about basketball, I found it interesting that when the sport was invented they would nail baskets to balconies with no backboards. This made it easy for spectators (in the balcony) to help their team by either swatting the
Basketball is a popular sport that millions of people play around the world but does everyone know how basketball started and how it evolved throughout history? “Many people do not know that basketball was around since the early 1890s. In 1891, James Naismith, a Canadian-American sports teacher invented this simple sport”(Livestrong.com). Certainly the rules and the style of play wasn’t similar as today’s game. When it was first played in the early ages, there were more carrying the ball and tackling other players in order to get the ball.
When you think of basketball you probably think of the names LeBron James, Kevin Durant, or Kobe Bryant. Even though these are some superstars of the game there is one man way more important than them and without him they wouldn’t be playing the sport they love. This man goes by the name of Dr. James Naismith. Naismith was a physical education teacher at the YMCA International Training school. One day Naismith had the challenge of finding an indoor game as an “athletic distraction” for the students. Instead of adapting outdoor games like soccer and lacrosse, Naismith remembered a game for his childhood days called duck-on-a-rock where you had to throw a rock at a “duck” on another large rock. To do this it takes extremely good accuracy. From this Naismith created 13 rules for the game
