The History and Culture of Bangladesh
Bangladesh came to existence in 1971 when Bengali East Pakistan seceded from its union with West Pakistan. It is located in southern Asia bordering the Bay of Bengal, between Burma and India. Bangladesh and West Bengal form a region which is called Bengal; and Bangladesh is sometimes referred to as East Bengal. It has a population of around 138,448,210 people. (CIA World fact book)The nation’s rapid growth has led to serious overcrowding. About one third of this extremely poor country floods annually during the rainy monsoon season, causing for bad economic development. Bangladesh has three main seasons; tropical, mild winter that lasts from October to March, a hot humid summer that goes from March to June, and a humid, warm monsoon season that brings them back to October. The terrain of the country is mostly flat plains across the country and hilly on the southeast side. Bangladesh shares many cultural and geographical features with nearby West Bengal. The country has come so far in the last few decades by gaining their independence. The educational and government systems of Bangladesh have improved greatly.
History and Geography
Bangladesh is a proud nation built on the foundation of a rich literary tradition and history. As they finally one their independence from Pakistan in 1971 after many years of struggle, the masses of people that once made East Pakistan and East Bengal cheered as they finally gained their independence. As this youngest nation of South Asia was free to chart their own destination, with high hopes of becoming a better nation. George H. W. Bush was born in Milton, Massachusetts on June 12, 1924. Bush was born into a wealthy family. His parents were Prescott Sheldon Bush and Dorothy Walker Bush. His family moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, when he was a young boy. Bush family was rich and his parents raised their children to be modest. Bush father was an investment banker who later became a republican senator from Connecticut, serving from 1952- 1963.("George Herbert Walker Bush pg, 20") As a teenager bush attend Philips Academy Andover, a boarding school in Massachusetts. Bush was also into sport a lot. when he was in academy he was a captain for baseball and soccer team. Bush graduated high school in 1942.
One of the aspects of Crime and Punishment that stands out is that it is much more than a simple crime story. It is in fact a great study of the mind of a murder. Raskolnikov is a terrifying but sympathetic main character precisely because he is just twisted enough, just ill enough, for the reader to believe anyone is capable of such atrocities. The jumping off point for Raskolnikov is his idea of extraordinary and ordinary people. Looking at his theory and applying it as a tool for analysis of Raskolnikov himself leads not only to a deeper understanding of this idea but also of Raskolnikov. It also explains to some degree how seemingly benign ideas can lead a believer to do unspeakable things.

A paragon of realist literature, Fyodor Dostoevsky deftly exposes nihilism in his novel, Crime and Punishment, published in 1866. Its protagonist, Rodion Raskolnikov, is intelligent yet bitter and unfeeling, having denounced his morality and bonds with society. He embodies the qualities of nihilism, the desertion of all emotional and ethical concerns. This philosophical doctrine is historically ubiquitous, particularly with the Nihilist Movement, one of Imperial Russia’s Great Reforms, and the growing apostasy and atheism of postmodernity; both instances aptly highlight the abandonment of virtue, individual and societal.
In his novel Crime and Punishment Fyodor Dostoevsky uses Raskolnikov as a vessel for several different philosophies that were particularly prominent at the time in order to obliquely express his opinions concerning those schools of thought. Raskolnikov begins his journey in Crime and Punishment with a nihilistic worldview and eventually transitions to a more optimistic one strongly resembling Christian existentialism, the philosophy Dostoevsky preferred, although it could be argued that it is not a complete conversion. Nonetheless, by the end of his journey Raskolnikov has undergone a fundamental shift in character. This transformation is due in large part to the influence other characters have on him, particularly Sonia. Raskolnikov’s relationship with Sonia plays a significant role in furthering his character development and shaping the philosophical themes of the novel.
i didn’t know what to imagine when I was going to my field site for my first official observation. I’ve been observing them for quite a while before this actual project without realizing it, but this time with the help of my uncle, they allowed me to observe them in their premises. My uncle reassured these people that this would be confidential and I would not use their names or do anything malicious that would get them into trouble. I guess you can consider my first official observation when I was with my uncle and a fight broke out. I was really anxious, really did not want to go and was close to flaking, and then I thought we’re heading towards the middle of the semester it’s too late to flake. I had no choice, but to suck it up and go with the flow. I was mainly scared, due to me being the only female and the people I was going to observe were Bangladeshi men. Curfews are here to stop teenagers from roaming the streets at night and causing trouble. In consideration of having a curfew for teenagers, the crime rate has greatly decreased. Many tests and studies have confirmed that curfews do keep teenagers out of trouble. Curfews have helped keep many of the streets safe and free of crime in various cities around the world, even cities in Michigan.
