Term Paper: The History of the Internet
The Internet began like most things in our society, that is to say that the government started it. The Internet started out as a experimental military network in the 60's. Doug Engelbart prototypes an "Online System" (NLS) which does hypertext browsing editing, email, and so on. The Internet is a worldwide broadcasting resource used for distributing information and a source for interaction between people on their computers.
In 1973, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) initiated a research program to investigate techniques and technologies for interlinking packet networks of various kinds. It then expanded to other governmental agencies and then to higher education. This was called the Internetting project and the system of networks, which emerged from the research, was known as the "Internet." Al Gore is described as "an advocate of the information superhighway". He helped bring it to our national attention that he invented the Internet. It is not true that he invented the Internet but it is true that he had a small part in its development. Since the early sixties, when Al Gore was still in high school, the development of networking technology had already started. It is true that the Internet has grown and flourished tremendously during Gore's tenure, but that hardly means he caused it to happen.
The Internet has revolutionized the computer and communications world like nothing before. The Internet enables communication and transmission of data between computers at different locations. The Internet is a computer application that connects tens of thousands of interconnected computer networks that include 1.7 million host computers around the world. The basis of connecting all these computers together is by the use of ordinary telephone wires. Users are then directly joined to other computer users at there own will for a small connection fee per month. The connection conveniently includes unlimited access to over a million web sites twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. There are many reasons why the Internet is important these reasons include: The net adapts to damage and error, data travels at 2/3 the speed of light on copper and fiber, the internet provides the same functionality to everyone, the net is the fastest growing technology ever, the net promotes freedom of speech, the net is digital, and can correct errors. Connecting to the Internet cost the taxpayer little or nothing, since each node was independent, and had to handle its own financing and its own technical requirements.
... The history of the internet takes us back to the pioneering of the network and the development of capable technologies. The explosion of the internet’s popularity in the 1990’s was large and dramatic, boosting our economy and then helping to bring it into a major recession. One can only hope that the explosion becomes organized and slightly standardized in the interest of the general public.
The United States federal government funded new developments in computer science, which resulted in the creation of ARPANET, a project that connected computer systems at five universities with the intent that if one server was destroyed, the connection would remain due to the four other locations . This fundamental structure of the internet was developed as a peer-to-peer system, which means that there is no central control point in the network, therefore the internet is arranged like a web, in which all pieces of information travel as equals. The interconnectivity of the internet resulted in the creation of the World Wide Web in the early 1990s, which is an internet program that developed the internet into a massive, interactive mass medium
We live in a world where the internet lays a pinnacle role in our day to day lives. The internet is used globally and can impact the world in many ways. Firstly, what is internet? Well internet is a computer network which globally providing a wide range of information and communication services.
The internet was invented on January 1, 1983 by a group of researchers. Not many people had access to the internet because it was still experimental, and a computer was expensive and took up a lot of space. But when Tim Bernes-Lee invented the World Wide Web in the 1990’s, most people had access to the internet. Since then, the internet has been one of the main focuses in society.
The internet that society knows today, was once a very small concept that only a few people could grasp. It started out very small, but over time it grew to become so popular among people, that it became a household term. Computers were becoming more conventional and many more people started being able to afford them. There was a major growth of internet users across the world. Due to the demand of technology being used, the internet had created a new way to perform simple tasks and go about activities. It had initiated a ...
Born in the mind of an MIT professor in the early years of the 1960's, "the internet-or net, for short"(Jonscher,154)-has been maintained as the information-technology center throughout the closing of the twentieth century connecting people and ideas throughout the world in little more than the stroke of a key and faster than the blink of an eye . Imagine the possibility of transferring one bank account to another with the click of a mouse-from New York to Hong Kong, or buying a car or even a house off a computer screen, or talking to a long-forgotten aunt on the other side of the globe for hours upon hours at zero cents a minute, or, especially, the unimaginable possibility of delivering a message to everyone in the world, one person at a time and as fast as that message can be forwarded: these were the dreams of J.C.R. Licklider; the dreams that became reality (Jonscher, 154). In 1966, just four years after the origination of the first idea, Licklider's dream of the Internet was adopted by Larry Roberts, project manager for the U.S. Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), and together they became the pioneers of the "Galactic Network". When Robert's proposal was accepted by the other members of the agency, a plan went into effect to create the "ARPANET", which in time became what we know today as the Internet. The first remnants of the Internet began with defense contractors and universities, beginning with UCLA in 1969. (jonscher, 155)
The Internet was first introduced in 1969 when a program called ARPA or Advanced Research Projects Agency. ARPA had provided a way to communicate, through a network, with the country in case of a military attack had destroyed traditional communication. It also connected four United States universities and was used for research, education and government organizations. In 1972, Ray Tomlinson introduced E-mail. In 1973, Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) became the standard for computers to communicate over the Internet. In 1982 the word Internet is used for the first time. The domain name system (DNS) is introduced in 1984, which identified network addresses with .com, .org, and .edu. From that point on everything began to rapidly change. Things like America Online was developed, viruses start...
But where did this all came from? Just when did we start using the internet the way we use it today? Clearly, these sorts of questions can be answered in simple, concise way. The internet was born in 1969 as a segment of research project of Department of Defense. Back then, the internet was known as ARPANET, a forerunner of the internet. Since the birth of the internet up to 1980's, Internet was used mostly by Universities and experts who knew their way around its complex systems and workings.
The Internet is a global network connecting millions of personal, institutional and company computers. The number of computers used by the internet is growing rapidly. The United States is connected with over 100 countries worldwide and linked together to exchange of data, news and opinions. The Internet is decentralized design. This means that there isn't just one computer that stores all of the information from the Internet. There are many independent host servers located throughout the US and the world that store the information made available to the global Internet community.
Since the development of the Internet in late 1980s, communication has changed enormously. The Internet has altered the lives of people in the world in a way that was never imagined before. As little as a decade ago, if someone tried to explain the Internet and World Wide Web, it would have been difficult, if not impossible, to understand. Computers were just beginning to become popular and few individuals realized the capacity of one PC, let alone the power of a network of electronic technology. By linking together computers, users could remotely access others on the network, share information, and send electronic mail as easily as pushing a button. Millions of people with shared interests, exchange information and build communities through Web sites, email and instant-messaging software.
The Internet was originally designed in the U.S. as a defence communication medium. At present, Internet technology is being widely used because it provides a variety of relatively in expensive services. If technologies are to used, they will need to offer something new to the users. They may be faster, cheaper, provide richer information, provide more information or offer sharing alternatives.

Internet as part of the history is the most important invention around the world which connects people thru phones, satellites and cables. People all over the world have access to it as it is everyday usage, and internet becomes globally real and in demand. To mention here, the usage for permits technically for travelling or getting tickets are electronically through internet, paying bills, shopping thru nets without going out (just browsing), playing games, and mostly the merit of possibly downloading music and movies in no time (just a click).
So you believe Al Gore created the Internet? Well that’s not possible, because I did. Yes, it’s true, a few years ago I was sitting in my basement with nothing to do and suddenly the idea came to me: why not create an inter-connected network of networks that will allow users to send mail instantly, download copyrighted songs, and order pizza, all from the comfort of their own living room? OK, so maybe I didn’t exactly invent the Internet, but neither did Al Gore.
Have you ever wondered who invented the World Wide Web? The answer is quite simple. The history of the World Wide Web, what a URL is what it contains along with what a web page contains are all important information when one is wanting to learn about the World Wide Web. We all know that the Internet is a source of all sorts of information. It’s like having a huge dictionary at your fingertips. In this day and age people are using the web for school, work, games, reading, weather, investments (Shelly and Vermaat). There are so many different things people can do with the web. The options are endless. The World Wide Web was invented in 1989 by Tim Berner-Lee. Tim Berner-Lee was working at a research facility,(CERN), as a software engineer. CERN had software engineers performing many experiments. When they were finished they would return to the regular place of business and would have no way of contacting one another. At this time Tim Berner-Lee understood the idea of connecting all computers together, and this was the beginning of the Internet (Peter).
