Swing Dance Influences History is constant . The universe is forever creating history that effects the present and the future . I would like to focus on one aspect of history that has and will forever influence America today . Swing to dance is a crucial element in the develop-ment of American culture . Swing to dance is a style that could only have developed in America during the 1920 's and have the impact that it did . Without to swing dance in America , American culture would be different to/from every aspect . Everything we know to be true today would not have existed were it not for Swing dance in America . Swing to dance is defined as a group of dances that developed with the swing style of jazz music in the 1920 's-1940 's with the origins of each dance preparing the popular " Swing Era " . Jazz music and swing dance both came from African American influences . At the time , the civil war had ended and WW11 was on the horizon . Out of this depression in America , there was a surplus of creativity bubbling . " So there was this balance in American mentality- we had to keep a positive attitude to the fact we couldn 't quite shake out our fears or ignore the reality of war . " America in the 40 's (pg.8 ) . Because America was trying to stay positive , people turned to music and danc-ing to stay positive during this tumulus time . African Americans brought their African cultures / cultured to America including their dance styles and because music and dance were booming , African dance styles took on an American feel and birthed a new form of dance that we know as swing dance . African American dances / danced was based on move-ment that was for their gods . This is the element that they brought to America , religious meaning into non-religious dancing . Africans were inspired by a European based foot patterns which is now known as a shuffle . The dance then had a set structure which included
Swing, the predecessor of bop, was big, sweet, and hot. The performers were big bands, fronted by a charismatic bandleader, yet the success of a piece depended mostly on the unity of the ensemble as a whole, rather than on the showcasing of prodigious individuals. The requisite instrument was the saxophone, which was often smooth and mellifluous. Songs were old favorites, or simple jazz standards, that had been arranged to suit a large ensemble. Swing bands played in large venues, such as ballrooms, and to large audiences, who seized the opportunity to not just tap their toes, but to "jump, jive, and wail." The swing era became the most popular form of jazz, as it catered to audiences as a form of social and interactive entertainment.

What comes to mind when thinking of the 1920’s? Most people think of the freedom the United States felt after World War I and that is exactly what jazz and the Charleston symbolize (Boundless.com par. 1). Jazz and the Charleston were extremely controversial in the 1920’s because they promoted a new way of thinking, which outraged the older generations (Knowles 160). Older generations did not like the fact that young people were becoming more and more daring with their actions just by playing music and dancing (Boundless.com par. 6). Today, jazz and the Charleston are thought of as out of date, but without them, music today would be completely different. Jazz and the Charleston revolutionized modern music and dance by altering the rhythm of classical music, changing the culture of American society (Boundless.com par. 1).
Jazz dance today is presented in many different forms. Jazz history and famous jazz dancers and choreographers have helped influenced what we know today, as jazz dance. It is incorporated in an assortment of styles including, hip hop and Broadway, Jazz dance today has its own movement, while there trendy modern types of jazz, traditional jazz never goes out of style. Over the years, jazz dance has become popular in the media and can be found in music videos, television, movies, and commercials. Jazz dance is always changing with the time periods, and can be found in social dance, musical theater, dance schools, and night clubs.
In the 1920s, many grand events were experienced by the population. A short time before the start of the Great Depression, this decade was one of prohibition, lavish parties, flappers; and also of the Great Migration. The Great Migration was a time period from 1917 to 1970, during which much of the African American population moved from the southern states, to more urbanized northern communities (Great Migration). While many relocated to the Detroit area because of the booming automotive industries like Ford, some moved to other metropolitan areas such as Chicago, Illinois, and New York City. The surge of the Great Migration helped to initiate what is now known as the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was a period of great accomplishments for the African American community; from music, to art and poetry, and even to dance. This era was also a time during which the birth of racial equality happened. The Savoy Ballroom, located in the heart of the Harlem district, was the birth place of the lindy-hop and the quintessential swing movement, thus making it a crucial part of the Harlem Renaissance, as well as the progression of dance even to this day (Swinging at the Savoy). Jazz culture to be exact, is the topic at hand. Jazz culture expands throughout many genres and is expressed in many ways. The many genres of jazz are Big Band, jazz funk, modern jazz, smooth jazz, Latin jazz, and jazz fusion. Each of these comes with its own unique sound and origin. Latin jazz, for example, employs rhythms from both African and Hispanic backgrounds. The sound is particularly up tempo with divided eight beat patterns. Jazz artists who have portrayed these qualities of jazz to the world are at the very core of its culture. Many people who are in places of power in this society or are held in some form of esteem have had some exposure to the arts, whether it is classical or jazz. Jazz is a treasure to American culture, which originally came from New Orleans of South part of America in 19th century. It’s a special music because it contains changeable rhythm and improvisational performance. But what makes jazz so special in 1920s is that Jazz could not only be performed by an individual but also could be performed by a group of people. This music performance style shows important things about American society and culture itself.
The evolution of dance styles during the 1920’s was influenced heavily by the music craze and the introduction of electric lighting made dancing late into the night possible. The end of restrictive clothing of the Victorian era was over and the new style was quite free and flowing making it easier to dance to the exciting melodies being created.

As it grew in influence and popularity, Jazz brought many young people together. It was such a social movement it brought mixed young people together to dance “The Charleston, The Cakewalk, The Black Bottom, The Flea Hop.” Since Jazz was such a influential and persuasive musical style. It had its time as a great social leveler and unifier. It brought together African Americans and Americans, in a love of fast, rhythmic music, which was multiplied through the radio and the recording industry. “What a crowd! It has created so many subgenres with itself, like Funk Rock, Swing, Bebop and many others. Many schools even have a Jazz band for the students. That is just one-way how Jazz music effects music today. There are also many other ways that Jazz has affected music today, like without it, African-Americans would not have the same rights as whites, because Jazz was one of the things that helped with the Harlem Renaissance, and the Harlem Renaissance is what started the pathway to civil rights for African-Americans. With so many different styles and artists, Jazz has survived to today, since the early twentieth century, and has become a popular style of music.
Influence of Jazz on American Culture Nowadays, many believe that jazz is not that important in the music genre, but with our history, jazz plays a big role. “Jazz does not belong to one race or culture, but it is a gift that America has given to the world,” quoted Ahmad Alaadeen. Jazz in the 1920’s opened the eyes of whites and invited them into African American culture; it evolved Americans to where we are today since it brought a change to the music scene, an acceptance of African Americans, and a change of lifestyles.
