According to The Walt Disney Company or Disney as how we had called the company for years was founded on 16th October 1923 by the Disney brother, Walter Elias “Walt” Disney and Ray Oliver Disney. At this day, is not only when Disney was founded but was also the start of the company as The Disney Brother Studio where Disney was first known as before they changed it at 1926. Four years later at 5th September, the studio came out with the first animated short subject film, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon, which had known as Trolley Troubles. At 18th November 1928, Steamboat Willie was released by The Disney Brother Studio where it is the animated short film where Mickey Mouse and his companion Minnie Mouse were firstly introduced. And in 30th July 1932, the studio came out with their first full-colored cartoon, Flowers and Trees the Walt Disney’s Silly Symphony. In the 9th of same month but two years later, Donald Duck shows his first appearance at The Wise Little Hen and a year later of 23th February; the studio produced the first Mickey Mouse cartoon in colored called The Band Concert. In 21st December 1937, The Walt Disney Studio produced their first feature-length animated film, Show White and The Seven Dwarfs which was based on the same fairy tales written by The Brothers Grimm. And later onward, the studio produce more well known short and feature film such as Pinocchio(1940), Fantasia(1940), Dumbo(1941), Bambi(1942) and more. From this statement we can perceive that, movie according to Noel Carroll as a kind of entertainment rather than educational material since it is derive from popular art or popular entertainments. Contradict to this point, one might say that the function of mass art is to command mass audiences. As to command someone, the medium in this case the movie will contain hidden messages, thus this go against the point of movie as only an entertainment.
Since there are two points of view, our research will try to find out specifically whether Disney's film can be categorized in which part. Other than that, our research will only be focusing on the educational aspects of the films of Disney and not other hidden message as suggested by Noel Carroll. Hope that our findings will be interesting and useful to the public.
