In Haarlem, Holland, during the year of 1937, the story of The Hiding Place begins with Corrie, whom is the narrator. The book begins with the one-hundredth anniversary of the Boom watch shop her family had owned. The family was very well liked in the community; they had very strong religious ties and wanted to help out anyone who might need it. During this time, Nazism was on the rise. Many of the Dutch people were under the assumption their neutrality would remain just as in World War I; but they were soon to find out this was not the case.
The main setting throughout the book was the Dutch house Corrie was born in, known as the Beje. “The Hiding Place,” in the book was a secret room the ten Boom family built in their home to hide Jews …show more content…

Her family would join the Resistance Movement. As a family, they opened their arms to the community members in attempt to flee the Nazis. By giving them a secret room to hide in, they could feel safe in the event of a raid. This story is very religious provolone. At times, Corrie believed what she was doing could be wrong, but staying focused on God allowed her to know what was correct. The members of the Beje practiced each day for the event of the raid. Jan Vogel, a Dutchman on the side of the Germans would be the reason for their raid. The members in the secret room were saved; unfortunately, the ten Boom family was all captured. Only a mere ten days after being taken into custody, father passed away. Corrie was ill during the time, and was placed in confinement for some time in the Scheveningen Prison. One week following her release, all of the girls her age were sent to the gas chambers; another reason to believe God is on her side. Corrie made a few stops before arriving back at the Beje. She went back to watch making, and wanted to open her homes doors to those in need. Corrie felt relief through giving speeches and speaking the word of God, when during one occasion she met Ms. Bierens de Haan, whom was very wealth. She made a promise to Corrie, if her son returned from Germany, she would allow her to use her mansion to live-out Betsie’ dream.
