After reading the book “The Great Gatsby” and watching the movie, I have come to the conclusion that the movie is almost identical to the book. Jay Gatsby, the protagonist, mysteriously makes money in order to build a life suitable to regain the love of his life, Daisy. Gatsby lost her to Tom Buchanan, an immensely wealthy and arrogant man, five years prior to the setting of the story because he went off to war. Nick Carraway, being so close to Daisy, is exploited by Gatsby in order to reunite himself with her. Tom has a poor mistress named Myrtle Wilson who is married to a mechanic named George Wilson. The plots between the movie and the book are almost the same. In the book, the climax happens when Myrtle is killed, which in turn causes George to go off the deep end and kill Gatsby. …show more content…

However, in the movie, the climax happens when Gatsby is killed. Everything that happened after that, like the revelation that Gatsby was just as lonely as everybody else, and everything he did was in vain, was the falling action. Nick equally serves as the narrator in both settings because he’s the main character and is present in all the major events whether he’s a background voice or physically there. Nick’s morality, honesty to himself and most others, and unbiased, slow to judge qualities make him really stand out among the rest of the characters. He is pretty much everything that all the other characters are not. The characters we met in the book were pretty well portrayed in the movie. For example, Tom was very athletic and aggressive in the book. In the movie, he seemed slightly less muscular but was still very aggressive. In the book, Tom’s voice is described as a “gruff tenor”. However, in the movie, I thought his voice was a bit too severe and lacked the roughness we were put under the impression he had while reading (7;
