Two of the main characters, Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchanan, seem to have everything but yet want more. At first glance, it seems that they have most things in common. Both are wealthy, popular, and love Daisy. However, once examined more closely, their wealth, their popularity, and their love for Daisy define them as very different one from the other. Wealth played an important role in showing the reader the difference between Tom and Gatsby personalities. Both Gatsby and Tom are wealthy, but the difference is that Gatsby built his way up compared to Tom who was born in a rich family.
“The Great Gatsby”, is a popular book of impossible love, dreams, and tragedy. It takes place in the roaring twenties, following the life of members of the wealthy class; Jay Gatsby, Nick Carraway, Daisy Buchanan, and Tom Buchanan. The point of view is from a man, in search of achieving his dream to become an author. This soon to be writer, is stuck in the middle of intense drama amongst the opposing sides of the bay. “The Great Gatsby” explores themes of social upheaval, and the overwhelming obsession with wealth. Jay Gatsby, the protagonist of our novel is a young, elegant, mysterious, millionaire in New York around the 1920s. He lives in a mansion on West Egg where he throws extravagant parties for all of New York to attend but in reality only desires the attendance of one person in particular, Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby met Daisy a long time ago at house party while he was at Camp Taylor before the war. Gatsby claims that it was love at first site when he and she first met. Both Daisy and Gatsby would write letters to each other as the war went on, but soon Daisy waited no longer and married Tom Buchanan a robust Polo player of a very wealthy family. Daisy and Tom, without knowing it, lived right across the bay from Gatsby’s place, in East Egg, where Gatsby would reach out for the green light flashing from their dock.
The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, tells the story of a man of meager wealth who chases after his dreams, only to find them crumble before him once he finally reaches them. Young James Gatz had always had dreams of being upper class, he didn't only want to have wealth, but he wanted to live the way the wealthy lived. At a young age he ran away from home; on the way he met Dan Cody, a rich sailor who taught him much of what he would later use to give the world an impression that he was wealthy. After becoming a soldier, Gatsby met an upper class girl named Daisy - the two fell in love. When he came back from the war Daisy had grown impatient of waiting for him and married a man named Tom Buchanan. Gatsby now has two coinciding dreams to chase after - wealth and love. Symbols in the story, such as the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock, the contrast between the East Egg and West Egg, and the death of Myrtle, Gatsby, and Wilson work together to expose a larger theme in the story. Gatsby develops this idea that wealth can bring anything - status, love, and even the past; but what Gatsby doesn't realize is that wealth can only bring so much, and it’s this fatal mistake that leads to the death of his dreams.
The past and future to people are the most frightening thing. The past is what makes your future, or helps you fix your future and make it better. People sometimes stay in their past because they are too scared of the future and what their future is going to be like. The past is usually when all the good things happened to people, so they try and stay in the past but the point of the past is to have a plan for the future, and plan that will make your life better. The novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and the film Chicago directed by Rob Marshall takes place in the 1920s and shows us how different we see life now, then how people saw life back then. In the novel The Great Gatsby, Gatsby wants to forget his past except for the fact that he still loves daisy, While Gatsby longs to re-create his past romance with Daisy and build a new future together. He tries to hide his past with non credible facts about his past in order to help his future become more successful. The Film Chicago which is very similar to The Great Gatsby because Roxie, has a bad past that puts her in a bad position, That finally put her on the new paper. Roxie only cares about fame and money and attempts to break free from her marriage to build a future for herself.

The same concept comes from The Great Gatsby which clearly illustrates the characters and situations differently from the book compared to the movie. One of the most influential characters of the story plot and most differentiated between the F. Scott. Fitzgerald and the Baz Luhrmann version is Nick Caraway. Nick has the distinct honor of being the only character who changes substantially from the story’s beginning to end in both cases. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a fictional story of a man, Gatsby, whose idealism personified the American dream. Yet, Gatsby’s world transformed when he lost his god-like power and indifference towards the world to fall in love with Daisy. The pursuit of power is shown through Daisy’s decision of Tom over Gatsby as Gatsby is seen as a lower social status with little power compared to Tom who has tremendous power. Pleasure is seen through the extramarital affairs of Tom and Myrtle as well as Daisy and Gatsby. The Great Gatsby, through Tom and Daisy, reveals the human condition of the pursuit of wealth, power, and pleasure through these examples and shows that the “American Dream” is not possible in a life where one’s surroundings are pushing him/her towards a life of wealth, power, and pleasure.
For example, Leonardo Dicaprio’s character of Gatsby was focused on emotions. I enjoyed that Redford was very calm and cool about everything and the way he approached the character but, Dicaprio made such an open and outgoing character which made the movie more entertaining. DiCaprio captured Gatsby’s intensity and charm and brought out the crazy mood swings and took his character and the audience to a more emotional place. Both Robert Redford and Leonardo DiCaprio had their own way of approaching the character and really selling Gatsby but Leonardo DiCaprios was better. Another reason I prefer the 2013 version of the 74’ is because of the bond and friendship Nick Carraway played by Tobey Maguire and Gatsby had MaGuire was able to bring a true and strong meaning to their friendship that made his and Gatsby’s bond feel organic and real and you were able to see that clearly unlike with Waterston where you just saw the friendship and didn’t feel any emotion. But I felt much more of a connection with his character than I did with the ’74 version. If you have read the book and seen the original film, then you understood where Nick was coming from in the scene where he was furious with Gatsby, after he believe he killed Myrtle only to find out that Gatsby wasn’t the one driving the car that killed Mrytle, MaGuire, did a fantastic job in showing his emotions and how what happened to Myrtle and the person that killed Myrtle affected him. I loved that Nick was a lot more real in this movie. He didn’t hold back and he gave the audience a reaction that anyone in life would have had if they were in his situation. Nick had the major issue of being dragged into situations because of people he knows. I thought Maguire did a great job of showing ...
Many aspects of Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby are polar opposites. They grew up differently, they look at life from vastly diverse views, and they treat people contrarily. Their commonalities lie in their wealth and their connection to Daisy, although they differ in many aspects there as well. At the end of The Great Gatsby, Tom gets to keep living his privileged lifestyle and he still has Daisy while Gatsby is left dead and betrayed.

Essay 4: Comparative Analysis of Two Texts When comparing two texts, one must look at the characters and themes to find similarities and differences and we see a similarity with the theme of accepting reality in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet and The Great Gatsby. There are differences in both texts with the way the characters fight reality, but the outcome is the same. The power of love in both texts is looked at as more important than social priorities and the main characters will do anything to get what they want and it results in death. One might come to conclusions to say that F. Scott Fitzgerald based the relationship of Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan on Romeo and Juliet, seeing that both stories have characters who do not accept the reality and in their minds, love overpowers everything. When looking at these two texts side to side, one would notice many similarities in the actions of the main characters.
The Noval The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgarold portrays the twisted love story of Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. The movie version of this iconic book is equally impresive however there are some diffrences between the movie and the book that are considerably signifigent, but for the most part the 1974 movie of The Great Gatsby stays true to the 1925 book.
