The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton tells the story of two rival gangs. The Socs, who have a high socio-economic status, live in the more affluent part of town, and come from indulgent parents or families, and the Greasers, who live in the more undesirable parts of town, have absentee parents, and would be almost penniless if it weren't for their jobs as auto mechanics. Society views the two gangs quite differently, the Socs as these innocent children because of their higher standard, and the Greasers as juvenile delinquents because of their reputation. Unfortunately, most of the Socs do not have this, and to make matters worse, they are never chastised or given a consequence by society when they do wrong, just because they are the upper class. Consequently, they continue to do more and more wrong, knowing that at the end of the day, they will not be scolded or given a punishment. Bob Sheldon is the perfect example of this. Bob was the leader of the Soc gang, a rich child who had parents that never told him “No,” and ones that never got him in trouble. He continued to push his limits and his actions were progressively negative towards the Greasers and the rest of society, and one day, it cost him his life. This is a great menace to society for two reasons: One being that the society is being tricked into judging the Socs by their appearance, and they are being blinded by the status of the families they come from. They think the Socs are innocent, nice and proper, just because they have more money than most people. Secondly, they are a literal threat because the wrong things they do affect the people and the town, for instance, they have emotionally and physically affected the Greasers, and they constantly trash houses in the area with their parties and when they are drunk, which is quite …show more content…
The Socs are almost always the ones that are starting the fights. For instance, jumping the Greasers all the time,just out of boredom! They usually also target weaker victims, just like when they beat up Johnny. Johnny is a Greaser, the “pet” of the group, and one of the youngest. The Socs affected him so badly that he had a scar emotionally and physically. “Johnny's face was cut up and bruised and swollen, and there was a wide gash from his temple to his cheekbone. He would carry that scar all his life. His white T-shirt was splattered with blood. I thought he might be dead; surely nobody could be beaten like that and live”(Hinton 29). Here, the author reveals that the Socs did some damage to Johnny that he would have as long as he lives, and it’s not only the physical hurt. Stereotyping is a constant theme throughout The Outsiders. It may seem as if the Greasers are the ones that really have to deal with presumptions, but the Socs also have quite a bit of stereotyping to deal with. While the outside world tries to force these stereotypes onto the gangs, they also tend to assume things about each other. This leads to divisions between them that most likely would not exist if stereotyping was not so abundant. The Greasers are pegged as nasty hoodlum troublemakers that are dropouts and criminals. On the other hand, the Socs are made out to be the opposite- crisp, intelligent young adults that have no real problems. Many cases of stereotyping between the two groups leads to violence between them.
In S.E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders Socs and Greasers are enemies. Society put them against each other and labeled them. Greasers are the poor, dirty, no-good kids that nobody wants around. Socs are stuck-up, perfect, rich kids who looks down on everybody. In the book, two boys- Johnny and Ponyboy- start some trouble with a couple of Socs, and Bob is killed. They have to run from the police, all while the tension between Greasers and Socs is thicker than ever. Throughout the novel, it explains how “things are rough all over”. The Greasers have it the worse because they feel emotions so harshly, they are constantly getting jumped by the Socs, and they only have each other because their families are broken.

My evidence for why the Greasers struggle more than the Socs is that the Greasers have to make many personal sacrifices, & they experience a lot of violence.The Greasers are poor with a few good friends to help them, while the Socs are rich with no “real” friends to support them. Because of the sacrifices they made & the violence they were exposed to, the Greasers struggled more than the Socs.The Greasers struggle more because they were exposed to violence. This quote from the book shows that people will think even worse of the Greasers because of their actions. Normal people would not do what they are doing because they have principles. The Greasers were fugitives, and this gave people an even bigger reason to be fearful of them and consider them a disgrace to society. The Socs did comparable things, but were not punished for them like the Greasers, and were still able to keep a sterling image of themselves. I feel as though the novel The outsiders has many themes, but the most important one is belonging. The greasers are a group of poor, low class youth that don’t have much and live on the wrong side of town. They are always held accountable for their actions. On the other hand, the Socs are a bunch of high class youth that are very privileged and aren’t held accountable for their immature actions.
First, both books have two opposing gangs. In West Side Story, the Puerto Ricans make up the Sharks, and the Americans make up the Jets. In The Outsiders, the wealthy teenagers make up the Socs, and the low class youths make up the Greasers. Both gangs are rivals, constantly fighting to try and prove themselves superior to one another. One gang from each book, the Greasers and the Sharks, are typically the ones that are looked down upon by others. They are poor and usually cannot afford many things. On the other side, the Socs and the Jets are the superior gangs. They control most of the town, and normally beat up other gangs.

This can lead to crime by ways of theft, assault, and even murder just to satisfy the needs of your social group and to make the leaders of your group proud of your actions, thus receiving praise and a willingness to continue doing these actions.
A socially approved form of a gang is a club. Americans generally view clubs as character building leadership opportunities; whereas, individuals typecast into gangs are persecuted as criminals. Clubs are formed with constructive goals in mind, such as making it easier for its members to find parts for a particular brand of automobile. Socioeconomic class, academic achievement, or perceived roles in society for its members all play a part in the preferential treatment given to a group which a society deems a club rather than a gang. For instance, parts of the public anticipated that motorcycle riders would cause a massive rise in crime within the Hollister area during the motorcycle rally.
The Outsiders by S.E Hinton is a well explained novel about two rival gangs who feel only hate for each other. However, the gang gives them a home and develops true loyalty. Dallas Winston, a tough and rugged greaser best shows that one single character is able to have two completely opposing personalities. Dally is a wanted delinquent for many different crimes but is truly devoted to his own gang.

Along with this desire to be able to do what ever it is that one wishes to at any given time, a person wants to be successful at what they do. The type of success that a person wants may be measured in money, property, fame, or even the entourage that follows him or her. This kind of lifestyle is only truly lived by a certain kind of people – gangsters and mobsters. For the rest it is just a dream to be able to live such a life, but for gangsters and mobsters this lifestyle is reality. But these gangsters can go around doing anything they want without the fear of consequences, which would, for most people, lead to long-term prison sentences. We are commonly shown in many movies and television shows that gangsters can just walk into an alley and beat up whoever they wish and be able to leave as if nothing ever happened. In “The Gangster as Tragic Hero” by Robert Warshow and “Our Mobsters, Ourselves: Why The Sopranos Is Therapeutic TV” written by Ellen Willis the gangster’s middleclass part of his or her lifestyle is brought out along with this “dream” reality at the same time.
