Jonas’s father does not feel and element of suspense at his ceremony of twelve but Jonas has a reaction to his father’s lack of suspense.
To show that Jonas’s father had a lack of suspense the text states, “‘for me there was not the element of suspense that there is with your Ceremony. Because I was already fairly certain of what my Assignment was to be,’”(Lowry, paragraph 3). This proves that Jonas’s father knew about how the elders watched him and how they knew he spent most of his time at the nurturing center. This also proves that Jonas’s father likes his job and knows that the elders pick jobs that are good for the person and community.

Their plan involves leaving sameness and heading to Elsewhere, where Jonas knows the memories can be released to the people. He has a connection with Gabe, a special child who has experienced the memories, unlike the rest of the community. Jonas has a strong love for Gabe, and he longs to give him a better life. “We’re almost there, Gabriel” (178). Even with a sprained ankle, Jonas keeps pushing forward because he wants everyone to experience what The Giver has given him. He wants them to have a life where the truth is exposed. But, it is against the rules. After various failed attempts to share these secrets and get reactions from them, he does not know who to turn to. The only other person that knows of these secrets refuses to do anything about it. Thus rendering Jonas to feel "Dissatisfied, anxious, indignant." (Jonas's mother) Montag, has a similar emotions when he finds what books actually hold within.
He starts to believe that a world of sameness where no one can decide or make choices for themselves is boring. Lois Lowry is warning readers that living in a world of sameness is not something to create as it is boring and dull, but if the world follows conformity and does not value diversity and difference enough, society could become that of Jonas’s. When he turns twelve, his job for the rest of his life is decided as the Receiver. His job is to receive all the memories the previous Receiver has held on to. While this is beneficial for Jonas as he is able to leave the society and his job of the Receiver behind and get freedom, the community is left without someone to take the memories from The Giver.
In 1948 Jonas loses both his parents because they're deported to Siberia where they will die but the parents saved Jonas and his three sisters by pushing them off the train before they left the station. Jonas and his sisters went to a village and were taken care of. When he was younger Jonas joined the Komsomol(communist youth). As Jonas got older he got drafted into military service where he showed his expertise in nuclear materials and weaponry to prove his confidence to his superiors. He continued his expertise into submarines where he went to a Naval Academy and when he finished he got his hands on the latest Soviet submarine and being its captain. At this point Jonas was already planning on defection and this helped him even more. Before his defection Jonas made a fake wedding for his return that would be a diversion for his defection. Jonas had to rig the electronics and that would show them going on the correct path but in reality they're not going the same way. On his way to Sweden he has to pass a lighthouse but luck was on his side and that lighthouse light was off and this helped him even more and got him closer to Sweden. Jonas finally arrived in the waters outside Sweden and he triggered the ships alarms and told the commissar that he would have to go to shore and find out where they are and that's how he

He is very mature, responsible, and shows competence throughout the story. Jonas is very smart and when someone is being immature, he tries his best to help them learn from their mistakes. As the new receiver he shows much maturity, and is very prepared for adult life, has grown up. According to the text it states, “Don’t play it anymore,” Jonas pleaded…….. “Asher,” Jonas said. He was trying to speak carefully and with kindness, to say exactly what he wanted to say. “You had no way of knowing this. I didn’t know it myself until recently. But it’s a cruel game. In the past, there have” (134). Jonas knows that, war games are not appropriate, because he is one of the only twelves who know what war was really like. He knows this because the Giver showed him that memory. Jonas is trying to explain to Asher and help him understand why it is a bad game to play, but Asher does not care to listen. The text also states, “Once again, there was just a moment when things weren’t quite the same, weren’t quite as they had always been through the long friendship. Perhaps he had imagined it. Things couldn’t change, with Asher” (66). Jonas is happy for Asher that he got the recreation job, but now things were not the same anymore. They both got different jobs, and now Jonas is realizing that he is different from everyone else. Even though things are hard for him right now, he is not acting like a child and throwing a fit.
He felt the younger brother had come to deprive him of his share of the father’s inheritance. The second thing he was ignorant of was the fact that he had access to the things of the father and that he need not wait for any special ceremony to make merry and be happy with his friends.
Nobody in the community knows what feelings or real, deep emotion is. They can’t live with music or color. They live in a bland community where everybody wears the same things. They live in a world of different shades of grey. They don’t have seasons, what would life be like without summer? Summers without sun wouldn’t be a problem in their community either because they have no weather. “‘What did you perceive?’ The Giver asked. ‘warmth’, Jonas replied, ‘and happiness’. ‘And--- let me think. Family. And something else--- I can’t quite get the word for it’. ‘It will come to you’. ‘Who were the old people? Why were they there?’ It had puzzled Jonas, seeing them in the room. The Old of the community did not ever leave there special place, the House of the Old, where they were so well cared for and respected. ‘They were called Grandparent.’ ‘Grand parents’” (123)? In this quote about Christmas Jonas learns more about family and being together, joyful. It’s sad that the community does not have anything special such as Christmas. Jonas learned the new concept (to him), of grandparents. He thinks grandparents are special but he doesn’t have real parents. At this point in the book Jonas understands real emotion and feeling for someone else, such as loving your family members, and he longs for that
...s us to celebrate our differences. We also realise that we live with the same kind of memories that Jonas struggles to carry, every day of our lives. Although the fact that the memories are new to him makes it harder for Jonas to bear the pain, it also makes it easier for him to appreciate the beauty of the little things. We, on the other hand, being familiar with the sensations, do not cherish them as much as we should. None of us savors the warmth of sunshine or the beauty of snow the way Jonas does. Perhaps we need the darkness of the night to appreciate the brightness of the moon.
Jonas always tells his dreams. He always was there for chastisement. He always shared his feelings at the evening meal. He also always took his pill every morning. “Now he swallowed the pill his mother handed him.”(Page 38). By the end of the book Jonas is rebellious. He stops taking pills for emotions that he is supposed to take everyday. Jonas stays at the Giver’s house when he sees his father kill a baby. Jonas also tries to escape from the community when Giver creates a plan to escape from the community which Jonas barely follows because of Gabe’s release. “But your role now is to escape.” (Page 162). This means that Jonas has to escape and the Giver must stay to help the community after he is gone.
