“Quang come here,” one of my cousins said as he came to get me. “I want you to play with us,” he kept saying repeatedly. Eventually I gave up and played with them. Are families were having a party tonight. “Today was suppose to be a great day,” I thought when I woke up this morning. In the end it didn’t turn out like I hope it was. It all started during that night at the party. During this time I was young and I was still in Vietnam. My family and I live in a house inside my grandparents’ land, which was quite large. Today was going to be a great day. My family was having a party for fun, not to celebrate anything. During the party there were so many people everywhere. People were enjoying themselves, eating food, and singing karaoke. My cousins were running around everywhere. My mom was making food in the kitchen with some of her friends and my dad was drinking beer with his friends. Later, during the party my mom ran out of food to make. She was going to ride her bike to the nearby store to buy more food, but before she did I ask if I could go with her. She did let me...
On the way home, my mom asks me, “Why did you have your arm behind your back the whole time
When i Was at the mosque outside on the court while i was playing a 3 on 3 basketball game. And the teams was me, bosh and Salah vs Abu, Sunny and Musa. We started to play, and my team was down by 8 points. So i was kind of mad at my team that we was down by so much. So i told them let me take over and try to get us back in the game. So they let me take over and we went on a 7-0 run and out of nowhere we was only down by one point. Then we made a turn over, then they got the ball and they passed it to abdi. And abdi got through his defender and bosh stepped up and tried to block his shot but he head faked bosh and i step and try to block his shot and i jumped up tried to block his shot and my knee cap moved out of
It was a sunny day with a sweet aroma of blooming tulips. The sunlight glittered on their faces as the breeze rattled the chestnut tree above. There was an occasional giggle as they talked, but there was also a hint of discomfort and awkwardness between them as they peeked at each other’s face and recoiled when the other looked up. When the bell rang twice, I saw them say goodbye and walk away from each other. In the darkness of the crowd, a glimmer flashed into my eyes from Hannah’s cheeks.
“You need surgery.” Just a few weeks before a national basketball tournament, these words would change my life forever. Basketball is my true passion that is a part of who I am. Unfortunately, I experienced failure at meeting my athletic aspirations, due to an injury. Although my particular injury was out of my control, I constantly felt ashamed that I could not completely fulfill my athletic goals as I had hoped. I felt I had let everyone down who had been there for me and supported me. This injury has also shaped me and changed my perspective on how I see and appreciate certain things.
At the start of the afternoon, everybody just wished they were at the beach. By the end, all we could think about was how much fun we had playing board games. After Mom won for the hundredth time, we decided it was time for dinner. The smell of hotdogs and hamburgers floated throughout the house. Laughing, talking, more laughing, and even more talking echoed around us.
I woke up before dawn on a Saturday. I almost grumbled about the early hour when I remembered why I was up so early, Stephanie’s funeral. “Pull it together,” I thought to myself as I almost started crying. This was going to be a difficult day. My older sister, Sarah, and I pulled on our nice dresses and were out of the house by eight fifteen. We now had a long drive to our uncle’s house in Atlanta.
I started wrestling in the seventh grade, and continued to wrestle in high school. I found wrestling to be a great sport to help me stay in shape, but also make great friends. Many of my friends in high school I made from the wrestling team. Everyone is very supportive of one another, through the many ups and downs wrestling has to offer. There are many injuries that one can suffer from such a rough sport. Many wrestlers end up getting injured during sometime of their wrestling career. My wrestling injury came when I was just a freshman on the wrestling team at Bishop Guertin. It was a time of much pain and recovery that I had to endure in order to make it back out on the wrestling mats. I was afraid and in a lot of pain when I got injured for the first time.
Sad that we were forgotten, we were barely hungry anymore. When the kids went up for food, we stayed behind. From across the hall, I could see our relatives having a great time gathering their food. Then, something was blocking my view. When I looked up at the face of the figure, I realized it was my Dad coming this way! Quickly, I looked over to Sam who saw the same thing I did. We waited while he slowly made his way down the hallway. By the time he made it, he knew we saw him. Just before the door frame, he stopped and waved for us to come towards him. On our hurried way out of the room, I glanced over at Maddie. She saw us leave and didn’t seem to care all that much. Although Maddie likes our older cousins, she has much more fun with the younger ones. For some reason kids love Maddie. Instead of caring about what Sam and I were up to, she turned her attention to the children whom loved her attention. When Sam and I arrived at our father, he waited to speak so we could catch our breath. “You guys want to sit with your cousins right?” Without hesitation, we nodded in agreement. “Well I guess you can…” Before he could finish, we sped up the hallway.
My mom had been going to school in Greeley and staying at my Aunt Margaret's house . She had been away for two weeks and wanted to come home for the Fourth of July weekend. My mom had suggested that I go back with her and visit colleges, shop, go to movies and just spend time together. I had been feeling pretty sorry for myself since she had been gone. I had been working alot as a maid and helping my dad run the house, I was getting very irritated with my siblings as I felt that I was the only family member doing my part to help my dad. I was really excited to have a week with my mom to myself. The whole ride over we were talking about what I wanted to do that week. Making plans and having "me time" seemed very important at the time.
My sister Amy went on to tell me about her friend who dared to do such a feat.
It was a day of eager anticipation. It was a day of last-minute planning. It was the day before my fourteenth birthday. I had been looking forward to the party for at least two months. Everything was accounted for: balloons, Super Soakers, and music. There would be a barbeque of magnificent proportions. Miraculously, everyone had read the RSVP deadline and called in a week ahead of schedule. An enormous ice cream cake was to be delivered with eight large pepperoni pizzas. Needless to say, I was excited. It was to be my first party at our new house. I helped cook the enormous array of snack foods. I eventually surrendered to the temptation and stole a few strips of marinated steak when my mom wasn't looking. I had gone to bed that night with dreams of family, friends, and possibly a new stereo system.
It was about a year and half ago when I was taking my first car to the car wash. The car was very decrepit and antiquated, as I remember when went through the car wash. I guess I was just sitting on the bench in the front of the building when I thought to my self. As I was thinking I was wondering how the car would of looked twelve years ago, when it was new.
Difference is something that can be hard to pin-point especially, I think, in hindsight. The first encounter with something unfamiliar can easily be remembered in the context of what was learned following the meeting. To some extent this is true of my first conscious experience of meeting someone who was different from me. When I look back and consider my age, my mindset at the time and the way the meeting was treated by those closest to me; it is not surprising to find that the experience feels incredibly normal.
While walking by the shore I was amazed by the soft smooth sand beneath my feet, it seemed like all the worries I had throughout the year were finally erased. There was a rock facing the ocean that it thought was really cool, so I decided to settle there for a moment to appreciate the view, I closed my eyes for a second letting myself comforted by the sounds of the ocean, the sounds the waves were making against the rocks was impressive. Spending a few more minutes on the rock I decided to go back. Tying to help my parents for making breakfast, they sent me and my brother to get bread, and a few croissants at the bakery. My brother was driving while I was still wondering the landscape, I thought it was interesting how this island contained a mix between mountains, and beaches. At the table, conversations were spontaneous and positives, I forgot how fun breakfast could be when spending with family. That day we had has a plan to go to the beach, my mom could guess what me and my father had in mind. It was scuba diving and hunting with harpoons, but before we had to first buy the necessary equipment, and study the fishes we could hunt, since some were protected, and review the fishes that were edible. Finally done with preparation we headed to the beach, me and my dad waited that day for so long, being a big fan of hunting, I was quite impressed by the number of variety the Mediterranean Sea could provide, also what really shocked
As usual I woke up to the sound of my father pounding on my bedroom door, hollering, “Get up! Get on your feet! You’re burning daylight!” I met my brother in the hallway, and we took our time making it down the stairs, still waking up from last night’s sleep. As we made our way to the kitchen, I thought about what to have for breakfast: fried eggs, pancakes, an omelet, or maybe just some cereal. I started to get hungry. As usual, mom and dad were waiting in the kitchen. Mom was ready to cook whatever we could all agree on, and dad was sitting at the table watching the news. The conversation went as usual, “Good morning.” “How are you today?”
