The First Thanksgiving On September 6, 1620, 102 men, women and children from England boarded a small cargo boat called the Mayflower and set sail for the New World. The passengers left their homes in England in search of religious freedom from the King of England. Today they are known as "pilgrims." After braving two months at sea, crossing the stormy Atlantic Ocean, the Pilgrims finally landed off the coast of the New World. In the freezing December waters, they anchored the Mayflower and sent a landing party to what is now Plymouth Harbor beach. To secure the small landing boat against the rain and winds, they tied it to a large rock - Plymouth Rock - and so begins the legend of the original Thanksgiving tale. The Pilgrims found themselves in a harsh new environment. In the middle of winter, they slowly built a settlement at the site of an abandoned Pawtuxet Indian village. When most people think of the early settlement they think of the first successful settlement, Jamestown, but this was not the first settlement in the New World. The settlement at Roanoke was the first attempt to colonize the New World. The settlement at Roanoke is often referred to as the “Lost Colony” because of its unusual disappearance. The reason people often do not know about the first settlement at Roanoke because it was abandoned, forgotten, and lost. The Roanoke settlement was located on an island on the northern coast of what is now North Carolina. A few more than a hundred English men first settled the colony at Roanoke Island in 1584. The conditions were harsh and between the lack of supplies and the troubles with natives of the area the settlement was all but doomed from the start. Three years after the initial settlement was founded, in 1587, more English arrived this time there were one hundred and ten colonists that consisted not just of men, but of women and children as well. Women and children were brought to the New World so that the settlement could become a fully functioning society. Of course this idea obviously did not work out as planned. The war going on in Europe between the English and the Spanish caused a delay of more supplies and people. If there had not been a prolonged delay in the resupplying process the entire course of American history may not have been what we know it to be now. If the war had started any earlier or later then people might have known more about the original first settlement of the New World. Nathaniel Philbrick tells the story of the Pilgrims, beginning with them breaking away from the Church of England, emigrating to Holland, and eventually to America on the Mayflower. He talks about the relationship they had with the "Strangers" or nonbelievers that accompanied them on their adventure. He tells stories about disease, death, deception, and depression. I had never thought about it, but you know some of those people had to be suffering from depression. He tells of joys but mostly of hardships and as he describes some of the first meetings with the Native Americans. His description of the first Thanksgiving is not the same as the pictures I have seen all of my life.
Jamestown was written by John Smith. Plymouth was written by William Bradford in 1630 and end in the year 1646 because of his death. Both stories about Jamestown and Plymouth were the journals of the two captains which they recorded all the details in the period sailing and living in the new land in North America. The people in two journey also had the hardest time. They faced with the Starvation Times. Because they were Inexperience, unwillingness to work, and the lack of wilderness survival skills. In Jamestown they just grew tobacco and forgot to plant food. On the other hand, in Plymouth, because of hunger, disease, environmental hazards. So they needed help from the Indians. That the reason why we celebrate Thanksgiving to remember the gratefulness of the Native Americans to save our lives. On December 4, 1619 settlers stepped ashore at Berkeley Hundred along the James River and, in accordance with the proprietor's instruction that "the day of our ship's arrival ... shall be yearly and perpetually kept as a day of thanksgiving," celebrated the first official Thanksgiving Day. Some erroneously believe John Smith married Pocahontas . In actuality, she married John Rolfe, an Englishman who started the tobacco industry in Virginia. Two different English settlements came to the Americas, one that goes by the name Jamestown that was led by Captain John Smith and the other named Plymouth led by William Bradford came to Americas with no knowledge of the terrain or the people they might encounter. From the long journey on the Mayflower, leaving England for multiple reasons, having to built a new salvation through the harsh conditions, and hoping their main purpose is achieved peaceful.
Of Plymouth Plantation by William Bradford gives us an insight into the endurance of the early settlers and the kind of pain they went through in order build the foundation of our great nation. They embarked on the new world and developed a colony from the ground up. However, there troubles started long before they even stepped foot on the land. With a strong hold on their religious beliefs, they continued their voyage to the new world even though there were questions about the safety of the vessel. They managed to work hard on the ship and make it to the new world, tired and hungry, only to learn that there was no rest to be found, but even more work.
The author brings to the attention of the pilgrims who read his text that there are many dangers that they might not be aware of, especially in the landscape of their soundings. The text provides the reader with instructions on things that the pilgrims should avoid that could harm them such as poor water sources, insects, and difficult terrain.
The Colony of Roanoke was the first English settlement in the New World, an opportunity for those seeking a better life, wealth, and religious freedom. After several attempts at settling in America, and with assistance from the indigenous people to Roanoke, a resilient colony was formed. When John White, an artist as well as an early pioneer of America, returned to America from getting supplies from England, The colonists had disappeared. Throughout many years, three dominant theories have emerged.

My favorite Thanksgiving is I think yet to come, because you dont know what the future holds. Now in the past my favorite one has been every year. I said this because every year we eat hefty helpings of good Thanksgiving food. Some of the things that you might see on the Thanksgiving table to feast on might be yams, turkey, dressing,cranberry sauce, and etc……… Every year we prepare, pray, and the gain an exra 15 to 20 pounds because of all of the food we have.

The purpose of the first few trips to Roanoke was to contact and establish friendly relations with native tribes in the area, fortify of the island, and search for an appropriate place for a permanent settlement. Another task included an attempt to leave a small force of men behind, while the ships returned to England for supplies, which were needed to finish fortifying the island, to continue the search for a permanent settlement sight, and to keep an English hold on the island. The effort failed due to the lack of supplies, weather conditions, and the strained relations with the native tribes, both violent and non-violent. Just when the situation was becoming dire, a ship came to their rescue and took many of the men back to England.
